You're an idiot if you don't think likely letters exist. They're sent out in advance of the regular notification and notify the recipient they are likely to get accepted. It's pretty obvious that's what's happened here.

Don’t bother PP. these people never believe something until it happens on TV/ in lawsuits. Your on a board of people who think they know everything. URMs know Ivy’s and top colleges have been sending likely letters and early signals since the 80s. They wants the desirable kids to feel the love .... since their kid is waiting it means everyone is waiting. But their not... and people are actually getting into school with donations. Go figure

DC is at a top private (9th grade) and is having a tough year getting adjusted, but I also recognize that she's not putting forth the effort I think it will take to succeed. Assuming she gets her act together and stays there to graduate, I'm curious as to what realistic expectations are, based on your theory. She'll never be in the top 25% but I'm hopeful for top 50 - 75%.

First look at the school profile and see where the grads are attending college. If very few are going to top 30 or top lac you are not at a top school. If it looks like upwards of 50% do and your daughter is in the top 50% then to be safe I would target the schools with easier enterance requirements. I would also try to make you DD put in effort and have her become good at something. If she only gets to top 75% I would look at the lowest ranked colleges for the school and make a determination about whether it’s worth it to you.
Also make sure your DD has the support the other kids have.... like does she need a tutor to adjust? Maybe she has gotten the crappy teachers because you did not know who to request? Maybe she is not socially comfortable and not focused?

Ultimately, you might also decide it’s a great idea for her just to get a solid education, I don’t really know your ultimate goal.
