I wonder if they ever reached out to the family. I wouldn’t be surprised, based on the articles about divisions between their kids, if they aren’t keen on the idea. I’m sure the SB would come up with some fake reason why they didn’t chose the name.

These people — the Lovings — have ZERO connection to Arlington. You either have to be a prominent national figure (MLK, a President etc) or have something to do with Arlington. Otherwise, there is no veil to this progressive feel good we are woke renaming.

Let’s just go with Liberty and take the second “for all” part of the Pledge of Allegiance. Or don’t change it at all. This whole thing is a waste of time and money. The SB certainly would benefit from spending time on other things.

I think the new name has been positive. It showed that the School Board cared enough about the school to listen to those who found the Stuart name offensive and spend money on new signs, uniforms, etc. Many students participated in the renaming ceremony in the fall, which the Lieutenant Governor (Justin Fairfax) and other elected officials attended. The football team had a winning season wearing their new uniforms. They are getting a kick now out of the fact that Merriam-Webster just announced that "Justice" was the "word of the year."

Time will tell whether more teachers will want to work at a school that isn't named after a Confederate, or whether more parents will want to send their kids there, or whether the SOL scores will improve.

NO! But, it sounds like you also wish to get rid of Washington.

Of course, slavery is unacceptable and all those other things you mention. But, you really think we should get rid of Washington? Here is a little tidbit: lots of awful things have happened in the past. Good people have done terrible things. But, Washington is not honored for being a slave owner. He is honored for helping to create a country of liberty and freedom. Slavery was a horrible thing--but our government (which Washington helped found) enabled us to get rid of slavery.

If you cannot understand that, then perhaps you should find a place to live that has never done anything wrong in the past. Please advise this forum of which country that might be.

How much liberty and freedom did the the slaves George Washington had have? Robert E Lee was no worse a human being than George Washington. He may have been more of an intellectual. But his lifestyle proves he was just as barbaric.

Not sure why anyone keeps arguing against either Washington or Loving. This is going to be another typical "Arlington Way' maneuver/ploy/ruse in which the SB pretends to be interested in the public's input, including those on the renaming committee, but all along has the name they want selected and will adopt, unfortunately for those who don't prefer Washington or Loving. Then they pretend they listened to all of us and pat themselves on the back for their virtue signaling.

The problem is replacing one patently political name (Lee, which dates from the 20s, and a product of that time, not the 1860s) with another (loving, a product of our times, not the 1960s.) that's why this is dumb. It's a nakedly political gesture for public education, which should be as apolitical as possible. This isn't about the livings, their relationship, or whatever. They didn't choose the name.

Just rename It Arlington Central. Hindsight is always 20-20, or seems to be, and it'll be about 5 years before Washington gets stripped from the name too, and cost even more in the process. This whole thing is dumb, and nothing to be proud of.
