This. I don't care about the politics of anyone but the shooter, since those politics apparently had something to do with his crime. I truly hope this is just crazy trolls who are defending the shooter or criticizing the victims. If these sentiments are actually coming from this website's intended demographic (DC area parents), I weep for this community.

It seems to me that everyone is trying to define the families as so different from them so they can claim this couldn’t POSSIBLY happen in their house/neighborhood/etc.

Except it can. Don’t fool yourselves. You can only do your best to keep your family safe and raise your children well but you can’t control what goes on outside.

This could have been any of us. They are just like all of us. All of everyone’s assignment of blame is just to distance themself from the tragedy.

The mom probably was trying to get this handled over the break while school was out and her daughter was safe at home with adults present. She used no nonsense, serious language when talking to the school about this boy and made it clear that she considered this boy to be a big problem. By focusing on the neo natzi aspect she was making this the school's problem, too. Her daughter was at risk and she was doing everything she could to distance her baby girl from that boy.

Where were the boy's parents? What were they doing? How did this minor with mental health issues get his hands on a gun!?

Their son was going to school, working a PT job, dating a girl and he was 17 years old. They were probably used to him being gone a lot and when he was home, he was not very communicative. He had been through some emotional/mental health issues in the past but the parents were hopeful that things were getting better when quite suddenly they weren't better at all..

I'm totally going off of what I've read about the situation - thus the "probably" - yes it is speculation that the kid was gone a lot, I do not know that for a fact. I have never met any of these people.

I just feel that some posters are assuming that this boy's parents handed him a gun and told him to go play in the street. I don't think that's a fair assumption to make about total strangers.

You're missing the point. I am a liberal and I don't believe that Nazi beliefs are okay. But I also don't think that the victims are saints because they are liberals. I think both sets of parents made some bad choices and now here we all are.
