Historically, that's not true, and Edith had been making comments to him about worthiness and how her life is complicated and how she wanted to say yes but . . . And he just pushed on and announced to everyone that they were engaged. I don't fault him for that, because I love Bertie, but this wasn't just Edith screwing up.

Mary seems to have forgotten that not very long ago, she was busted for her week of boinking. I know Edith wasn't privy to that, but for Mary to be holier-than-thou to Edith adds hypocrisy to general mean-spiritedness. At least she told Matthew about Mr. Pamuk before they got married. Lord G is hilarious these days. When he found out Bertie was rich he literally said something like "Good Golly that's fantastic!"

yes! that was the quote. his childlike glee between that and the dog are sort of cute. also he looked sweet in the top hat at the wedding.

didn't love the super fast wedding. they drag out mary's love life for 4 seasons (or however long it's been since matthew died) and then it's over in 10 minutes?

i think bertie would have stayed with edith if she'd told him. he basically said as much - that it was the lying that made him leave.

I'm so disappointed that the writers didn't have Mary make things right with Edith before she made sure she got her man. And THEN she was going to be ok with getting married without making things right with Edith and ensuring that she'd be at the wedding. Edith was only there because SHE was willing to be the grown-up. This notion rang true for me too. I have one sister and although we're quite close the idea that we may be the only ones left who remember everyone who came before us strikes me deep in the heart.

In general I found the scenes in this episode to be emotionally affecting.

Edith watching the kids playing in the cemetery related to the speech she gave Mary about accepting her apology, which is still haunting me. Anyone else with sisters see this? I have two and a very complicated relationship with the middle one, who I just don't understand at all. Edith's speech about it being important to make up because someday in the future they would be all they had, the only people to remember Sybil, the only people to remember Granny and their parents, or what the "old days" were like.
