The back story is that the Obamas' first choice for school in DC was GDS, which reminded them of Lab. But then security/logistics issues with the GDS Palisades campus caused them to settle on Sidwell.

I have heard this and it is very plausible because FLOTUS toured GDS before they moved to the White House.

If you think today that kids are automatically "directed to the same level of colleges" as their parents' alma maters then perhaps you are the high one. This area is full of students who will not necessarily attend the colleges or the "level" of colleges that their parents attended. Selective college admissions are very competitive and grades, scores and leadership also matter. You are correct that being the president's kid gives her more assurance of admission pretty much anywhere.

I think Columbia and Brown have good film programs. Not sure about the others. I agree she'll go Ivy or Stanford though.
