What is this obsession in America with middle schools, not a lot of countries have them and their children are successful and thriving. Maybe you should work on having effective elementary and high schools like most countries do. Middle-Schooled now are very different from middle-schoolers of old, assess do you really need them. Maybe what you need is academies at the high school level for older students to prepare them for college

I think the obsession is that you have to deal with MS before you get to HS. We're trying to look at MS and HS together as we're trying to figure out MS options since losing the charter lottery this year.

Not convinced they have a plan, other than blaming most gentrifiers for avoiding their several mediocre-at-best Ward 6 middle schools.

The "PLAN" by DCPS is that every middle school in Ward 6 must suck to high heaven and gentrification should just leave.

Jeff – 151

* Ward Six has capacity for 2,210 students in three middle schools.
* Ward Six middle schools use 45% of their capacity.
* Ward Six has 991 total students enrolled.
* Ward Six has 335 in-bounds students.
* Ward Six students fill 15% of the Ward Six middle school capacity.
* Most Ward Six middle school students reside outside Ward Six.

* All data w/o Shaw MS.

Eliot Hine and Jefferson have 300 students in buildings with capacity for 800 students. Stuart Hobson is enrolled near capacity.

Stuart Hobson is the second best middle school out of 14 in DCPS at 67% proficient. Jefferson and Eliot Hine are stronger than most middle schools, nonetheless under 50% proficient.

SH is up for phase one modernization in 2012. Jefferson in 2013, and EH in 2014. Each school is budgeted ~$15 million for a phase one modernization, yet it is unlikely Ward Six will get $30-$40 million combined.

Ward Six elementary schools have gained enrollment recently, but those gains are not being realized in Ward Six middle schools. Most Ward Six elementary students do not attend Ward Six middle schools.

There are Ward Six students at Ward Six middle schools who are classified as OOB even though they still live in Ward Six. E.g., Attend SH even though zoned for EH. Would need to know these numbers before assuming most ward 6 MS attendees reside outside of Ward six.

Even if you double the assumed number of Ward Six middle school students, you still have a hard time justifying three middle schools with capacity for over 2,000 students.

So they've been trying to get IB accreditation since 2012? And they still haven't gotten it? Not surprised at all since it's a complete and utter failure with no one supporting it whatsoever (thanks Henderson! Thanks Charles Allen!), but come on. At some point they need to stop using IB Candidate School, and just give up.
