Can anyone summarize how big a downgrade Tilden area going to Woodward will be compared to WJ?
Is Art is done deal for Woodward or some chane of Stem oriented programs can still happen? \
If Whitman safe from all these changes?
It’s not. It’s will be another w school.
W school in name with 30% FARMS.
Woodward Art school will be a big downgrade from WJ let alone Whitman.
Wait, is 30% FARMS the level of FARMS people have been freaking out about this whole time??
From the discussion I had assumed we were talking much higher.
You missed the point. 30% FARMS is not going to be closely resemble any W school so saying that it will be another W school is just misleading. Some peopole will be fine with 30% FARMS rate, some will be unhappy and some will freak out. For com[arison, WJ will be 15%. You may think what's the big deal in 15 vs 30 then some one may think what's the big deal vs 30 vs 45. But it's a huge difference. If you are in school with 60% FARMS then all these numbers will look good to you.
Why is that a huge difference? What is huge? Ultimately what matters is academic reputation. And yes, it is correlated with FARMS, but there are other factors - classes, teachers, neighborhood, direction. Academic reputation is not fixed. In this particular case, WJ is currently 18% FARMS and if you get moved to Woodward, it will most likely start at 27-28%. It is not earth shattering change. If your child can only succeed if school's FARMS is in single digits, maybe there is a problem with your child.
My one child went to attend top 20 in STEM from 50+ % FARMS. But that kind of thing is not here or there. 50% jump in FARMS is quite big for most families. I wouldn't call it earth shaterring persponally.
Right in your reply, you are cirting single digit, then WJ in mid teens and Woodward near 30%. That's a big range and you are treating it as same. It's not same by any stretch of imaginations.
If their kids are smart they will be in mostly AP classes with other smart kids and wouldn't even interact with the others.

Okay. It sounds like there’s going to be a good cohort of capable, motivated kids at Woodward. Even with an arts magnet.
That's the best hope. Hopefully motivated kids are not trying to get into WJ or some cases Wheaton for STEM. If that happens then Woodward will be left with smaller number of motivated kids.

+1. The overall FARMS rate for MCPS is 43%.

In terms of student population, Woodward will be fine. It will start as 25-30% FARMS, which is quite OK, and only get better as it is in the great neighborhood.
The regional plan is the bigger problem but WJ is in the same boat so it doesn't matter when comparing the two schools. They will be on their own as IB at Kennedy will be useless, and similar for STEM at Wheaton that will be more like an engineering program rather than science program like Blair. And of course, art magnet is nonsense. So if you are worried about losing access to a quality STEM program, you should be. But not because of WJ/Woodward split.
