It's highly unlikely that the shooter did a 180 degree turn on every conservative issue after marinating in conservatism most of his life. There are, after all, conservatives gays and yes, even conservative trans people (Kaitlyn Jenner comes to mind).

Where is the proof that the boyfriend was "trans"? Other than the governor of Utah saying so? The only one who knows if someone is trans or not is the trans person themselves since it is an identity that they claim for themselves. Only they know how they feel inside.
