Acting Social Security commissioner Leland Dudek says he is consulting with the Justice Department about shutting down the agency.
Dudek told the Washington Post: “Unless I get clarification, I’ll just start to shut it down. I don’t have much of a choice here.”

Hard disagree. Are you aware of how much power older people have in our political system? Stop trying to sow fear and undermine government.
Musk just eliminated a bunch of regional and field offices. And senior did almost nothing.
He eliminated tele-service, which will send an extra 85,000 people a week to SSA offices— in some case 150+ miles away after the FO closures. While at the same time cutting 7000 employees. Right now, the wait is 4-6 weeks for an appointment and many offices are double scheduled and run hours behind. If you add 85,000 people a week and cut staff, what do you think the wait time for an appointment will be by June? Not to mention people too frail to go into an office, people who have serious mental illnesses like erratic schizophrenics and nonverbal 7 year olds with autism, moms with newborns, the immunocompromised, institutionalized or hospitalized. People undergoing daily chemo following extensive abdominal surgery to remove metastatic cancer (immunocompromised, in significant pain and can’t miss a day of chemo to sit in a field office 2 hours away for 3-4 hours because staff is overwhelmed). If they can’t file online (and this is not tech savvy demographic and many seniors don’t have involved kids to help). Too bad, so sad.. Even though actual auditors found almost nothing fraud in the tele-system, which worked well and was not broken.
And yet, the seniors did almost nothing about the elimination of teleservice and the changes are happening in a week.
Now Elmo is taking monthly benefits hostage. And this guy has shown a willingness to shoot hostages. And even if he doesn’t shut them down this time, they are a great hostage. There will be a next time. And it certainly doesn’t look like seniors are doing anything.
Boomers assume that because they are a powerful group, the government will give them what they want without them doing anything except voting. What’s new here Elmo and FOGE are very willing to hurt Republican demographics— many changes, like to SSA (which rely much more heavily of SDI/SSID), department of Ag, USAID (which buys from farmers), tarriffs, Medicaid cuts— harm red states and MAGA demos as much or more than blue states. Seniors, farmers, small businesses, and people just trying to put food on the table are all taking a beating. And Elmo doesn’t care, because Elmo and Trump and the oligarch class have a financial interest in seeing social security fail.
So when, exactly, are Boomers going to get off their demographically privileged a**es and exercise this power yo think they have? Because a lot of damage has already been done. And an enormous amount of damage to the system will be done to SSA by 2026. And much of what Musk is doing cannot simply be undone. By the time the system is so broken that checks are actually not deposited (which is coming as they push the only people who understand 1970s computer payment systems into retirement), there isn’t a fast or easy fix and the people who actually understand the system are gone. It would take years to recover and a large budget increase to get the people needed (and an average of 2-3 years on intensive mentoring and trading for them to understand SSA regulations and systems). So, they will privatize and the people who run the program will have a financial incentive to delay and deny claims, and will take a nice fee off the top for their troubles.
SSA administers its programs while spending less than 1% of benefits on staffing and overhead. And has an error rate well below 1%. It’s an enormous program that is actually well run. You think a for profit company will do that?
The Boomers are too busy watching Fox News, worrying about trans people in bathrooms (spoiler alert— if 1% of people are trans, them you regularly have trans people in public restrooms with you. You just aren't aware because they look female and we hope you aren’t staring ant their genitalia through a crack in the stall— which would make you the pervert, not them) and golfing to be bothered with exercising their power. Because they are entitled and lazy and have never had to do anything but bite in large numbers. And everyday the do nothing, they lose more and more power.

Please let us know where you are getting your information from - the last I saw that most tele-services are being left as is and only changes is around changing of direct deposit bank information.

Older people now have zero power because their power was derived from them being a large and reliable voting bloc, but they don't care about votes anymore.
Trump and Elon have been telling people this out in the open since last year. They are literally in the process of taking over the FEC. If you think the 2028 elections or even the midterms will be free and fair you've got another thing coming.
I see that you are unaware of this thing we have called Congress, which is made up of representatives and senators, who are voted in by these things called voters, and then called constituents. Constituents can call their representatives and senators on these things called phones and see them in person, at their offices and town halls.

And then the Republican representatives and senators, who are in control of congress, will ignore the calls and stop showing up at the town halls.
