But we don't know why MT pulled her kid? She didn't say it was because of learning disability issues did she?

Not that she had to, but you are giving that as an excuse so it's relevant.

Well that sounds bitter. She has 3 kids and 2 are in APS. And the kid in private apparently coming back to APS. You have no idea why one is in private or how they are managing it. Even one of our current SB members has or had kids in private school. Loads of APS families have one kid in private and others in APS. Most common for parents of SWDS. Focus on how to make APS better for all kids rather than worrying about what other families do.

This is a privilege that most parents do not have. I have a child with severe special needs and I can't afford to pull them out of APS. Even if I could, I'm not sure a private school would take them.

Why didn't she keep her kid in public and focus on making APS better for all kids, as you say? This would include mine.

And for that matter, I also find it interesting that she didn't keep her kids in Drew but decamped for Montessori.

Is Erin's neighborhood school a S. Arlington high FARMs school too?

Erin's kids are all in APS right?

It's not a good look when you don't send your kids to your high FARMS high minority neighborhood school. Wonder how that will play in the election.

I don't disagree but it is not going to matter. Erin has some kids at an option school too.

Actually, if Erin's kids are at Key, she is a North Arlington mom. Miranda is a South Arlington mom. Both still white though.

I don't think it matters ("the look"); Drew vs. Montessori, since they were at the same site until recently.

And the immersion schools each draw along an East-West line, not from a North-South line.

But it's true, one lives in Green Valley, South Arlington, one lives in Cherrydale, North Arlington.

However, as long as they live in Arlington, that does not matter to me.

The only reason I mentioned where they live is that another poster tried to make it a race issue. The only race I see amongst the 3 candidates is white-white. I would have loved to see some of our Black activists on the board, but these are our choices. (Maybe not Symone tho)

With the pandemic mostly behind us (virtual learning happened - but we’ve exited that particular disaster), what tend to be the most heated issues with the school board and how would each candidate vote on those issues? In my mind, the big fights tend to be over boundaries and facilities. Are there any big boundary or facility reviews slated for the next couple of years? Personally, I’d want my neighbor on the board regardless of their politics simply because our interests in boundaries and facilities are most likely to align. I’d want to know the person could make smart decisions otherwise of course.

It looks like she's running for office to presumably do that + finding time to organize and attend community forums on kids' mental health crisis + her focus on learning loss. In the meantime, you're wasting time with us on an anonymous forum. Sorry you can't send your kid to private school. Too many parents of SWDs are in the same boat.

Symone Walker gloats about her child's private school experience. It's not a disqualifier. But Miranda's bringing that child back for middle school, so it's irrelevant.

Maybe the fitness guy will be better on health stuff in schools

He sits on SHAB according to his website. Maybe he is the ventilation guy?

He joined SHAB the same week he decided to run.

There is no ventilation guy (or gal), lol. And the 22 yr old has no connections to Arlington and doesn't give a shit about APS. He's one hop, skip and jump away from moving on to other pastures.

Agreed. I'm very tired of career politicians banking on easy wins in Arlington because we always vote Democratic. They are beholden to donors and businesses.

If you want someone who isn't beholden to anyone, then it looks like Erin is the only one. Miranda is beholden to her supporters in APE, some of whom are not even Dems. Angelo is beholden to the Dems.

you're such a clown. Angel is not "beholden to the Dems." He will please any donor that can continue his political career. Please learn the difference. I also didn't say I wanted a candidate is is not beholden to anyone. They ought favor causes and community groups that are meaningful to them. That is the point of grassroots politics. Please stop making everything about APE. Your are dominating this thread.

aah ok, so you're no ok with a candidate who is beholden to the Dems but you're cool with a candidate who is beholden to APE with its leaders who work for Kock funded orgs, and a policy not to disclose donors. Got it.

It's interesting how you keep trying to draw a line that doesn't exist from Koch to Miranda Turner. Is that seriously all you have on her?

Bottom Line: People are going to vote for Erin because she's not Miranda/APE. Even though their platforms are interchangeable. And nobody knows anything about Erin except those at Key.

Oh, plenty of us remember how the segment of Key parents led by Erin acted a few years ago and it wasn't good.

To be fair, it is possible they were in Montessori to begin with, which was co-located at Drew, and then moved to its current location.

She is living in Green Valley, and mentions her mom as a graduate of Kenmore and Wakefield... so...doesn't sound like the family was fleeing high FARMS environments and any point in time.

Oh good lord. So, let's review, we have

- the leader of a divisive lobbying group in Arlington who has no other relevant leadership experience
- a PTA president who a lot of people didn't seem to like
- a young upstart with political ambitions and no real ties to APS

LOL. This isn't bad. The first 2 have insights relevant to how APS runs, and they can see deficiencies from the parent perspective. We had some terrible SB members before current and most recent versions of the COVID and post-COVID SB. Whatever faults the recent/current SB members have, it's a major improvement over where things were 5+ years ago. Based on what I've seen, the first 2 candidates continue that trend.

Knowing neither of the women, they each have 3 children in APS, and families that call Arlington their home.

No they don't. One of Miranda's kids is in a private school. It's right on her website.

Where do your kids go to school?
My older daughter attends Our Savior Lutheran School, after withdrawing from Drew in early 2021.

Right after it says, returning to APS this fall.

which is different from being in APS now

You are splitting hairs; Miranda has 3 kids who were in APS, 2 who are in APS now, and 3 in APS again come this fall and by the time she serves on the board, if she wins.

Erin has 3 kids in APS, and will have 3 kids in APS this fall.

Angelo has no kids, siblings, relatives, or friends in APS, past, present, or come fall.

Are we sure they are not the same person? One in middle school. Two others in option schools.

I read the thread on AEM, did you?

The synopsis is that a mid-level guy at a think tank at a local university that receives funding from the Koch brothers also worked on APE, yes? Super compelling stuff.
