Yes it happened a month ago.
Why can’t we just “walk away”?
Iran wants reparations.
I get that, but would the US have to pay if we just leave and drop it? They could close the Strait but they can do that even if we do pay.
Yes. We have to pay. We attacked them unprovoked, committed heinous war crimes, and now we must pay.
I agree with the part in bold, but don’t quite see why the US would pay have to pay reparations if we just left. Ethically, we probably should, but that’s not my question.
Because Iran then would close the SOH leading to pandemonium. That economic and political pain would be much worse than working out an agreement. Leading up to the MOU Trump was desperate for a deal and was too weak to push back to Iran's demands that included reparations.
What would guarantee that they wouldn’t just close it again? “We want another $100b, Strait is closed”.
You are correct that Iran could threaten again. In that scenario, other countries with better ties to Iran (China, Russia?) could tell them to cool it.
The JCPOA had other countries on board (including China and Russia) to collectively restrain Iran.
I got that.
I still don’t see what we gain by giving them $300b+.
Why should we gain anything? This war was unjustified. We're the ones who blew up a girls' school.
I don’t think we should gain anything. We lost and it was stupid on Trump’s part to even pull us out of Obama’s deal let alone attack Iran, but I also don’t see why we would pay $300b if we just left.
You have to negotiate to leave.
US have military bases and business interests all around the Middle East.
You can’t just blow up things and experiment with your new weapon system for few months and say I am done and am going home.
No, we don't. Just order the naval ships home.
Many of the bases have already been destroyed.
Bahrain was in the US last week discussing the rebuild. The US is considering moving some of the buildings and equipment underground. Also there was a report released last week to relocate some of the bases and missions to ME countries that Iran cannot reach, such as Israel.
Oh Israel can be reached by Iranian drones/missiles and Israel does not allow US basing on its soil.
Now let’s look at what you posted. The US will abandon the Gulf States for Israel. Wonder how that will sit with Bahrain. Bet they will be happy that the US is leaving them high and dry well sparing no cost for Israel. What would you do if you were Bahrain or another Gulf state?
You would cut your ties with the US and Israel. China is already in the gulf making dealings.
WTAF are you spewing now? Please go back and read what I wrote and stop with the gotcha nonsense. I specifically stated that Bahrain was in the US to discuss the rebuilding of the bases in Bahrain and that the US was considering moving some of the buildings and equipment destroyed to the underground.

In addition, without the U.S. presence in Qatar, Qatar would not exist; Saudi Arabia sees it as its own territory. The UAE and Iran might be in open conflict over disputed islands.
Saudi Arabia fights with Qatar for media and political influence. The UAE has an economic rivalry, etc.
Qatar backs Islamist groups as it is tiny and needs to be seen as a powerful player to keep existing as a country.
Saudi Arabia and the UAE see the Muslim Brotherhood and other groups as a major source of instability in the region and are fully against Qatar's actions. They are angry at Qatar.
While the U.S. actions right now have destabilized the markets, this is nothing compared to what would happen if the U.S. withdrew completely from GCC countries.
Iran becomes a major regional power.
What the U.S. really controls is:
maritime security
deterrence against disruptions
crisis response capacity
That influence is enormous.
Certainly, right now, we have done damage for nothing. Apart from preventing some oil access to China for a while, which is huge in geopolitical games.
I am not disagreeing that the U.S. actions have caused mayhem, bcs right now our government is incompetent, and you can't fire all your five-star generals and not think things through before you act.
Leaving GCC completely would be insane for the U.S. as a superpower. I, personally, prefer to be a citizen of a superpower, rather than of some small country that has no influence anywhere.
Only a fool would say, "leave GCC." Or a foreign actor. Iran has them everywhere.

The US is only in the region to protect Israel. When the US leaves the region will be more stable because the US will no longer be imposing idiotic things like the Abraham accords and its constant attacks/oppression of Iran. The US has suppressed Iran for 50 years while propping up Israel and the gulf kingdoms. That is all over now.
The truth is the US has restricted the free market flow of oil in the region for years while wasting billions on defense spending. The US leaving will be great for the region and oil production.
