They shouldn't be there in the first place.

The problem is guest players are playing in club scrimmages taking playing time away from the players on the team who actually have paid to be there. Who cares about equal playing time either your kid's a starter or 2nd string in this case it doesn't matter. If you haven't paid to be on the team GTFO! I can understand guest players attending a practice with a team to see if there's a good fit but to have the guest player play in multiple scrimmages and even start games ahead of paid players on the team is ludicrous.

Hmmm... either you are on our team or McLean does this with all their teams. It pisses me off too. We have 19 girls on the team and don't need any "guests" coming to the scrimmages to take play time. And we don't need any additional players. We already have one more than can be rostered.

Over-rostering is a hedge against injuries (and COVID, I suppose), and is an unfortunate byproduct of the pay to play system. You're not going to avoid that one, it is everywhere.

There's a difference between giving opportunities to players in the club to "practice up" and/or "play up" with the top team, and guest players coming in from outside the club. The former is healthy club practice, and the latter, while unpleasant, is a byproduct of the elite level. An ECNL club will always seek to deepen the pool and play the best players. If you don't like that, and you think it should be purely pay to play, equal time, and all that, then you will be increasingly frustrated as the girls get older and the best players get an increased share of playing time. It's not rec soccer.

No girls on McLean green and ECNL at the oldest ages. But the ECNL does have a “composite” team playing in EDP to add games because of the large roster sizes.

Did someone get COVID or are you just trying to use COVID as an excuse to say you don’t want any competition?

I think this person is making the point that the kids practicing with the team who aren't officially on the team aren't following the COVID protocols the club has in place which puts the other kids at risk.

I understand what they are trying to say. I'm just pointing out the hypocrisy of trying to complain about a club by using COVID (which is a valid concern) in the same paragraph that you are complaining about playing time in a scrimmage. Is your son/daughter not playing in the scrimmages or games because of fear of COVID? Because how do you know the protocols of the opponents?
I'm sure all clubs have players that come to practices to tryout so how do those clubs handle those new players?

It's one thing to have players come to practices but another to have them come participate in games as guest players when you already have too many girls not getting adequate playtime. I've been told this is "normal McLean behavior" and looking at the rosters of the ECNL teams older than us have between 20-30 girls.

Question for parents of older McLean ECNL players. Are all of those girls only on the ECNL team or are they also rostered on the green team. With 30 girls on a team it would seem some may not ever even step foot on the field for an ECNL game?

Do other clubs do these same tricks?

My son doesn’t like the kids in that part of NOVA and the parents don’t have the best reputation, though Arlington gives them a run for their money in my book. I would be delighted if he changed his mind as he gets older. It is a lot closer to where we live vs the club that he goes to now. I am sure McLean has done nothing wrong. Perception is not reality no matter how much people are slaves to perception. And they are often fluid, as the theme of the thread suggests.

What is wrong with the parents?

MYS uses an app Team Manager - Game Changer. Before each practice/game a form in the app needs to be completed for each player answering a certain set of COVID related questions. Usually a parent fills out this form for the player prior to the activity. The kids that are not part of the team are not on the roster and therefore their parent does not have access to the Team Manager - Game Changer app. How do we know those kids are ok to attend practice if the form is not filled out before practice? Covid is a tremendous excuse for lots of things, isn't it. I mean one could justify almost anything 'cos covid, couldn't one?
