Because you can't ask questions of documents. Because the GOP can turn around and say that the manuscript is full of lies or that the Democrats are "misinterpreting" the words in the text. A lot harder to do that with a real person testifying.

It begs the question of why, if the GOP supports getting the manuscript, they don't support subpoenaing Bolton? Or at least requesting that he testify?
