Waterford is planning on having Lawrence purged. That's why he offered to get June a new posting in DC. WHen Lawrence gets purged they kill the whole household. He was trying to save her life. SHe was dumb not to realize that and take him up on the offer.

Good episode, though I was bothered that June had to provide beforecare for the man she’s forced to have sex with.

Yeah, that was messed up, but made me think back to last week when Serena told June, "You were supposed to be one of the strong ones." That took strength and courage and also had the effect of waking Lawrence up to the fact that this is the reality he has imposed on countless people. Thus far, he's been able to insulate himself and comfort himself with gestures like "saving" 5 women from the Colonies by making them Marthas (also a form of slavery, as far as I can tell).

I think Fred is trying to push Lawrence out - partly b/c June's there but also b/c until recently he's been shown a great deal of deference and has had a lot of power.

Fred is a small time commander and no one has respect for him. He's trying to gain respect bypassing his authority.

I think Fred has a comeuppance in his near future.

The whole Waterford and Stabler plotting against Lawrence sounded like the ending (code) of the book -- when the historians are talking about the internal purges, and one theorizes that the Handmaid's Commander was one of the early leaders who got pushed out after the first couple of years, when things were still shaking out. Most of the stuff in these episodes goes well beyond the book but we know the purges happened and the historians even joke about it like "of course they turned on each other, the practical people always push out the purists, it's like the Soviets in the 1930s." No idea what we'll see on the TV show but it seems like they are making a reference to the book, since otherwise we've been completely off script for a long time.

That didn't really bother me. He didn't want to have sex any more than she did. The only thing he really cares about is his wife, and the "ceremony" was devastating to her. Also, June did it not out of kindness to him but to his wife and, more importantly, because she needs the Lawrences to keep their sh** together so she can use them to get the children out.

There was also the very real threat that they would all be killed if they were shown to not be in compliance. She was trying to keep all of them, including the Marthas (who would be considered complicit), alive.

When June was asked about how it was going with Cmdr Lawrence and she said “he treats me with respect,” everyone in the room was thunderstruck. Respect towards a handmaid isn’t even irrelevant to them- it’s undesirable and a cause for suspicion, especially when the respectful man is one of the creators of Gilead.

I don’t see how the Lawrences could ever have a happy ending. They will always have to live with the incredible horror that cmdr Lawrence created, even if he does become some kind of hero and turns against Gilead. Too much damage has been done, and they will have to live with that.
A double suicide wouldn’t surprise me.
