Subject: Where do lower to middle class families go on vacation for the summer?
Women and men traveling solo make “friends” who sometimes become boyfriend/ girlfriend for the purpose of getting lodging.
A good example is a woman who traveled from Boston to Ocracoke, NC, and met a Mexican guy who sells burritos and tacos.

I think I am a PP from first few pages but will add that DH grew up MC in DC burbs and their only vacations were to stay with grandparents in the South for a few weeks at a time or maybe a family trip to OC, MD when they’d stay at a motel.
Something I recently observed: families stay in Fenwick Island or Selbyville DE (both nearly adjacent to OC, MD) in motels, campgrounds, cheap rentals (manufactured homes) and walk or drive to the closest beach, pool, waterpark, boardwalk. Ocean City, Bethany, Dewey, Rehoboth are too expensive especially restaurants and parking in those areas.

You can rent a luxury camper. My sister rents hers out for $100 a night and they will set it up anywhere you choose within a certain area. She lives near a popular mountain resort area. Would be more fun for the kids than a tent.

A hotel or beach house after Labor Day is 1/4 the cost of August.
Flights to grandma the week after spring break are half price.
Tons of families are doing cruises during the school year. They can be found for $50pp/day or kids go free sometimes if you don’t care about missing school.

We had 2 weekend nights at OC walking distance hotel, plus 2 weekend nights at outer banks beachfront hotel, paid total around $100 plus using reward nights & credit card points, for this summer.

My kids don't want to go sit in the woods for a few days sweating their butts off, getting eaten alive by buns, etc etc. A real vacation is anything that is truly relaxing. Pampering almost. or super fun and adventurous. So we just don't vacation really, the good thing is that there are so many rich people that have beach and/or lake houses around here that invite my kids to go with them so at least my kids get vacation. Me and the wife just stay home and argue about not having enough money to do anything.
Lame. Take your kids somewhere.

Vacations when broke are expensive. Like many my Dad did not get sick days or vacations days. And with 4 kids and a SAHM wife going away was not much of option given he lose pay that week and with six people that would mean 18 meals a day and two hotel rooms or renting a cabin. We never went.

I grew up in Florida in the '70s. We did a couple weekend hotel trips there, and back to Minnesota a couple of times for a month at a time to stay with family scattered throughout the state.
But because we lived in Florida, every day could be a vacation. We went to local parks, beaches, Busch Gardens, Disney World for day trips, etc. When my did get an inheritance, he added a buit in pool to our home. We became party central for our neighborhood.
Growing up in Florida was fabulous then.

We have a five person family. Even at something like a Super 8, a driving vacation is still a little bit over $1000. We can technically afford that. However, it makes more sense to us to just do day trips. It’s more economical, and I sleep better in my own bed.
Respect to those who love to camp. Back in the 70s, my half sister camped with her sibling and mother all the time. She packed every meal and took a friend along, I’m not saying it’s not virtuous, but I just have no interest in doing it.

Growing up solidly MC (not at all UMC), our only family vacations were camping. Never trips visiting family as all our family lived relatively close enough and also did not have space for a family to stay with them. We could not afford hotel vacations.
