So tired of generational divide

I'm an X'r, and DH was born in 59 and he is all boomer. Frustratingly so.

I was born in '68 and I couldn't be more of an Xer. I remember Challenger, the fall of the Berlin Wall, the 1980 election, Ronald Regan getting shot, and seeing the first video on MTV. I remember lines around the movie theaters for the opening of the original Star Wars movie. I saw all of the GenX movies in the theater Breakfast Club, Pretty in Pink, 16 Candles, Ferris Bueller, About Last Night, St. Elmo's Fire, Say Anything and many others I can't remember now.

I rode in the front seat without a seat belt. I walked to school and was sent out to play and was told to come in when the streetlights came on. When I was in middle school and participating in sports, I was expected to get myself to practice on my bike. At some point I know I wore a lavander polo with pastel plaid bermuda shorts and knee socks.

1960-64 were still very much in the boom years for babies.

I was born in ‘61 and had three kids before 1990 — so I definitely feel like a boomer with echo-boom millennial kids.

I also think people are really stupid categorizing Boomers with all kinds of things and behaviors that are more similar to the Silent Generation. People in their 60s aren't tech naive at all, not Republican, not racist, etc. This group was out there protesting before this and are out there now, they heralded in women's rights, etc. They intermarried racially and religiously, broke glass ceilings, and invented the technology you use.

I don't align with older Boomers. I tend to align generationally with Gen X - goals, culture, experience. There's a considerable gap in life experience I find with Boomers, they are more aligned with my parent's generation.We are in our own group called Generation Jones. 1959.

I’m fine with being reviled for my generational attributes — if it matters enough to anyone to do so, but as a younger boomer, I have little in common with older boomers. None of my peers went to Vietnam — just as an example. Birth control and access to abortion were available by the time I was sexually active. Colleges and service academies that were closed to older female boomers were available to people in my age group. Access to most social environments that were racially segregated for older boomers were legally and practically integrated for people in my age group. Just because someone decided to group age cohorts in ways that were meaningful to them doesn’t mean that I share the same sense of or experiences of social and major historical events.
