Meh. The rest of the Navy community doesn’t seem to mind it. In fact they’re sending out school-wide communications to unite messaging to stick with Oakton. So this Navy Chantilly parent is sticking with my original position. I would rather stay with the community, whichever direction they put us.

The emails from Navy are basically asking people to comment on the boundary tool and asking to preserve the current boundaries. I don't think it's about everyone wanting Oakton so much as not splitting up the Navy community, which all three scenarios do just in different ways. The proposal to move some Navy kids to Crossfield seems off the table for now. But there's still the weird Navy to Rocky Run to Oakton proposal. And I guess some are upset about being moved from Oakton to Chantilly, though I think that's not such a bad change especially since some Navy kids already go there. They should just unify around the Rocky Run scenario not making any sense.

The only reason they moved some of Navy to Rocky Run is because Crossfield now has taken over Franklin in all 3 scenarios. And the only reason Crossfield wants Franklin is so they can avoid Skyview and remain at a Oakton permanently, even though they are literally the furthest from Oakton and one of the closest to Skyview. They should be going to Skyview period.

All of FMES is zoned for SLHS and most people expect FMES to stay at SLHS. Many of us want to move to Skyview and a large chunk of the rising 9th grade class opted into Skyview. While there are some people who want to stay at SLHS, most families want to move and we all know that it will be stupid easy to pupil place into SLHS for IB and that there are bus stops that kids can use in the Dogwood neighborhood that parents would be able to get permission to use. Some of us who want are cynical and expect it to not happen, even though 5 of the 7 scenarios created by two different consulting organizations have moved FMES to Skyview, because Meren and SLHS are worried about their test scores dropping without the Floris and FMES kids.

I will be very happy if FMES moves to Skyview, people shouldn't be forced to take IB, especially at a school that doesn't have enough participation to offer all the HL classes in all of the subjects. SLHS has a small percentage of kids complete the Diploma and added the "career-related program" to try and bolster the number of kids who "complete and IB program." The program is a lousey fit for the school, the people who love it are people who want smaller classes and their kids not taking classes with the majority of the school. IB should be an opt in program not forced on families but FCPS won't do that because they know most families won't opt in.

I think they are trying to keep as many elementary school together as possible. I personally prefer Scenario 1, but understand that would be a major hardship for you.

Can I ask why you prefer Scenario 1? It doesn’t actually kelp Navy kids together. In Scenario 1, they actually take current Navy kids who live off of Bennett Rd and move them to Waples Mill ES. Their scenario also move kids who currently go to Chantilly HS over to Oakton HS. I am against this scenario.

In Scenario 3, they force all the Navy Oakton kids to move to Chantilly HS.

In Scenario 2, they leave the high schools alone but align the middle schools more with the high school. So Navy Chantilly kids would go to Rocky Run MS instead of Franklin MS. I would be ok with that. It at least preserves the current high schools for Navy kids which to me is super important.

We are likely to be zoned to Skyview, which is fine, but would this mean that in order to stay at the base school for 27-28 we would have to “transfer” to the base school and then be ineligible for sports at the school attended and played sports at for the first 2 years of high school?

I believe, and I could be wrong about this, that the initial phasing will be freshman in 27-28 and not moving Juniors and Seniors. Next year they will be starting with a full freshman and sophomore class, or pretty close to full. They are not going to be moving in kids for those classes because there will not be room. They will be adding the freshman class, the rising 9th graders.

This shouldn’t be like the boundary moves because there are not people moving out or spaces for older kids moving them in due to under enrollment. But I could be wrong.

There is no suggestion whatsoever that they are starting out pretty close to full. Last report was that they'd be at about 80% of the planned 1000-student capacity for 2026-27, and that was based on opening up Skyview to students across the entire county.

The last count that I heard, they are at 450 for the 9th grade class, that is 50 shy of what they were looking for. The 10th grade class is smaller and no one is surprised by that. If the 450 is accurate, they have 250 kids in the 10th grade. They are not going to move 11th graders in 27-28, not 10th graders because there isn’t space in that class, and add the freshman class.

To be accurate they wanted 500 freshman from five pyramids, not 450 from across the entire county. It would be good to know where the freshmen are coming from to know if they are relieving the schools that were most overcrowded.

They had 400 freshman from the 5 pyramids. Given that they were allowing kids to opt in, so there are families that probably never even looked at the emails to make a choice, and that there are no sports at Skyview, I am impressed that they got 400 kids from the 5 pyramids.

So you say, and perhaps it's even true. But the lack of transparency is a problem, and they did not achieve their initial goal, which was to find 1000 students from the five pyramids to launch Skyview.

Without knowing where kids are pupil placing from, it's hard to assess the effects of their opt-in model. The school that is most overcrowded may see limited relief. The school with the highest FARMS rate could lose the most high-performing kids. The way they are going about opening Skyview is anything but impressive or thoughtful. The only consideration appears to have been that, if Skyview couldn't offer sports this fall, they shouldn't force anyone living within the new boundaries to go there yet.

It doesn’t matter, they are setting boundaries for every year after next year. That is the point of this process.

You're missing the point, which is that without boundaries and with this county-wide opt-in approach it will be hard to tell for some time whether Skyview's opening actually does anything that furthers FCPS's objectives in buying the school.

The opt in program had little to do with relieving overcrowding, it was to get the school up this year with the initial opt in offer going to the 5 schools that are going to be impacted by the boundary change. Next year, 2027-2028 will be the year that the numebrs at Chantilly and Centreville drop because that will be the year the boundary changes take effect.

The boundaries will deal with over crowding. The families that opted in are not to blame for this mess, FCPS School Board and Reid are for not immediately adding the new school to the boundary review. They bought the school, they should have gone to the consultants and said “Add this into the review” and been done with it in December. Then all of this is over. Instead, they decided that they couldn’t do that and we have this mess.

The process is a separate conversation from what is happening now. The initial opt in numbers that I heard at the first Skyview meeting was 650 kids opted in, 450 for the Freshman class, 200 for the Sophomore class. I think those numbers are pretty impressive given that families had no clue about transportation and knew that there would not be sports. They mainly missed their target with the Sophomores, which is not a surprise, most kids don’t want to move from an established school and friend group.

I know kids from Westfield, Chantilly, and South Lakes who opted in. I believe that some of the Crossfield/Oakton families that live near Fox Mill ES opted in. I have no clue about Centreville but Centreville did not move kids in the original scenarios so that is not a surprise.

I think Rocky Run sends some to Centreville and Westfield (AAP?)
Franklin boundary includes AAP kids at Carson.

So, currently, Franklin sends Lee's Corner, Oak Hill, and some Navy to Chantilly.
I'm thinking it is a pretty even split with the AAP kids at Rocky Run that go to other schools.

This is moot in a few years with the elimination of MS AAP centers.

The school with the highest FARMS rate could lose the most high-performing kids. The way they are going about opening Skyview is anything but impressive or thoughtful. The only consideration appears to have been that, if Skyview couldn't offer sports this fall, they shouldn't force anyone living within the new boundaries to go there yet.

It doesn’t matter, they are setting boundaries for every year after next year. That is the point of this process.

You're missing the point, which is that without boundaries and with this county-wide opt-in approach it will be hard to tell for some time whether Skyview's opening actually does anything that furthers FCPS's objectives in buying the school.

You're ignoring the fact that the school couldn't be ready to open as a full high school this year. It is less desirable to many students due to lack of sports and all the extra curriculars just getting started, no seniors and juniors with experience to lead the way. By allowing anyone to opt in for this first year at least they are getting some use out of the school, and doing the necessary start up tasks so that it can take over as a full school in the future. "Furthering the objectives" will be done at that point by the outcome of which boundaries they assign to the school. The nearby schools will get overcrowding relief. The assigned zone will have a neighborhood school. That is the objective.

But Frankin has a lot of kids at Carson for AAP that go to Chantilly. Lees Corner and Oak Hill.

I live in Highland Oaks and I’d prefer to stick with the rest of the ES community, whether it’s feeding into Chantilly or Oakton. I don’t care, they’re both great schools. It’s sad that 90% of Navy goes to Oakton except for this little sliver of communities off of RT 50.

Tell me you don’t have a high schooler without telling me you don’t have a high schooler. The commute to Oakton is brutal and would be very difficult once your kid has after school activities/evening events. Navy Chantilly Moms are very happy with Chantilly and their short commute.

Meh. The rest of the Navy community doesn’t seem to mind it. In fact they’re sending out school-wide communications to unite messaging to stick with Oakton. So this Navy Chantilly parent is sticking with my original position. I would rather stay with the community, whichever direction they put us.

The emails from Navy are basically asking people to comment on the boundary tool and asking to preserve the current boundaries. I don't think it's about everyone wanting Oakton so much as not splitting up the Navy community, which all three scenarios do just in different ways. The proposal to move some Navy kids to Crossfield seems off the table for now. But there's still the weird Navy to Rocky Run to Oakton proposal. And I guess some are upset about being moved from Oakton to Chantilly, though I think that's not such a bad change especially since some Navy kids already go there. They should just unify around the Rocky Run scenario not making any sense.

The only reason they moved some of Navy to Rocky Run is because Crossfield now has taken over Franklin in all 3 scenarios. And the only reason Crossfield wants Franklin is so they can avoid Skyview and remain at a Oakton permanently, even though they are literally the furthest from Oakton and one of the closest to Skyview. They should be going to Skyview period.

Not really. Part of the Navy goes to Chantilly, and Rocky Run is the feeder middle school for Chantilly.

Plus, Oak Hill will leave Franklin and Franklin need students as a result.

Yes really. Franklin MS is currently a feeder to only Oakton HS and Chantilly HS. It’s a great way for Navy Chantilly kids to meet other Chantilly HS kids. Lees Corner ES goes to Franklin MS and feeds into Chantilly HS. If Navy Chantilly kids get put at Rocky Run MS they lose out on meeting the Lees Corner kids as well as other kids going to Chantilly HS. Rocky Run is an AAP center so splits to more high schools than just Oakton and Chantilly.

I think you're confused. The vast majority of Rocky Run goes to Chantilly. Like a larger percentage of kids from Rocky Run go to Chantilly than from Franklin.

Is that right? I didn’t know that. I was thinking like it might be like Carson which splits to many different high schools.

I think Rocky Run sends some to Centreville and Westfield (AAP?)
Franklin boundary includes AAP kids at Carson.

So, currently, Franklin sends Lee's Corner, Oak Hill, and some Navy to Chantilly.
I'm thinking it is a pretty even split with the AAP kids at Rocky Run that go to other schools.
