Cybil Shepard's character on Moonlighting was Maddie Hayes. Lots of girls watched that show and thought that Maddie was a cool name. There was a boom in the name Madeline (Maddie) that coincides when with these girls became women and started procreating.
My niece is a Maddie and my brother actually regrets the name. He said there is nothing like being out at the soccer field, calling her name, and having 10 little girls turn their heads.
