The only way an outside party MIGHT be able to force MCPS to do anything is if the boundaries are in anyway illegal or discriminatory.
Which while there may be people unhappy with the proposals, I don't think any of the proposed boundaries are either.
Like how far could they force a whole school district to be bussed?
I mean the obviously left out certain school districts as "protected" from being redrawn.
I'm not sure if you're aware of current bussing distances. Where some students are on the bus for 40 minutes.
It definitely looks like there are some areas that help grease the wheels. And even though we originally weren't interested in living there, will have to put it into consideration once everything is finalized and we know what everything looks like.
I'm not against you. And I think the fact that Wootton kept getting pushed off is bs and there was some discrimination in it. But you'd need valid reasons and proof if you plan or hope to bring outside parties in to intervene.
I get 45-minute bus rides. I grew up in a rural county where the entire county went to one school K-12.
What is the reason for Wooton being required to bus three miles in urban/suburban setting? If it's oops bad planning. Isn't that evidence enough. MCPS has a problem bigger than they can handle.
This is not bad planning. For once I think MCPS is doing the right thing - they are giving Gaithersburg residents what they need to prevent overcrowding and giving Wootton a new school 3 miles away so the kids are not in a school that is unsafe (at least that is what all these next door petitions were saying)
MCPS: We have addressed your petitions and will be moving you to Crown permanently along with some feeders from Gaithersburg
Wootton parents shocked that it will be a new Wootton with more URM: Bussing 3 miles is a problem
MCPS: We have addressed your concerns by moving some of the feeders to QO which is closer so you will not have a long commute
I sincerely hope Dufief and Travilah (all or part of it - the new homes on QO Rd) which are 2 miles from QO get zoned to QO, and Fields Road fully goes to Crown/Wootton.
Dufief and Travilah are the ones who care the least about this move since they are on a bus regardless. Those I have talked to actually like this option and welcome adding other schools to the wootton community. Also, there isn’t room at QO. Remember- this whole thing was to alleviate overcrowding at Crown and Gaithersburg? But that’s an inconvenient point when you just want to “punish” wootton kids.
And is that why I see all these signs on Dufief Drive asking to save Dufief? It sooo horrible that Dufief may end up going to QO that we need signs asking to save the school.
Dufief wants to remain with the Wootton cluster. They are the only cluster being removed from Wootton in options A-D. They do not mind as much about option H as some of the schools geographically closer to Wootton mind because they are on a bus regardless. They remain with Woottton even though Wootton moves physically. It's not hard to understand the difference unless you are just being deliberately obtuse.
Are you obtuse? What I am saying is they should not remain in Wootton. Wootton cluster needs an overhaul. Move Wootton to Crown AND move Dufief/Travilah to QO. MCPS should not care what Dufief wants or Wootton wants - they should do what is right factoring in proximity to schools. No more different rules for the rich and poor.
And the overcrowding in QO is not a factor, if Fields Rd, which rightfully should be in Crown, goes to Crown. Dufief and part of Travilah should go to QO, and Fields Rd to Crown. So your point about QO being overcrowded is moot.
Then what you are saying is you want to go back to the summer options with this type of desired outcome and methodology behind it, 1-4. Which the county has said is pretty much off the table.
They should come up with a new option then that is a hybrid of one of those options and option H. Option H should not be just about moving the existing Wootton school to Crown. That is not going to fill up crown or alleviate overcrowding at other schools.
They should look at all feeders to Wootton, QO, Gaithersburg, North West and shuffle them all around and then finally put the new Wootton at Crown.
Did you listen in on the board meeting yesterday? There isn't going to be another round of options. They may potentially tweak an existing option but that's it. Taylor makes the recommendation in February, they solicit community feedback and the final vote is late March. To go from A-H to what you are talking about to be Taylor's final recommendation would be a very big deal. It would eliminate any shred of trust and transparency throughout this process. I'm not saying it couldn't happen but it would be a very big deal if it did. Lots of warriors on this board who want to move Dufief and Travillah to QO to stick it to the Wootton parents, based on about a mile or so difference. Look at a boundary map, it's not like all zoning is determined by equal distance around each school. There are plenty of detrimental impacts to communities and kids uprooting longstanding feeder patterns but again, you don't care about that. You just want that schadenfreude.

made to add Fields road to option H. How big are Rosemont and Fields road? Wootton already has a pretty significant population so I imagine this would just be another situation of making a school overcrowded right from the get go which kind of defeats the entire purpose? Also, I hate that The middle schools don’t go to high school together-that is so backwards and I haven’t seen that in any other district I have lived in. You basically have to start over in High School.
500+ students for both fields road and crown from rosemont. It could grow to 1000 as there are still new housing development. It doesn’t work for capacity unless they move some Wootton ES out.
And this is why I keep saying they need to move out Dufief and parts of Travilah out. Fields Road belongs in Crown so to accommodate them something has to go out from Wootton.
And I keep saying A-D has Dufief at Crown, E-H has Dufief at Wootton, the county is saying no more official options, so will they just completely blindside Dufief and move them to QO? They probably would, but doing that is a complete violation of trust in the process.
Wasn't Dufief to QO at one point? Wouldnt really be a blindside right? Or did they replace QO with Crown?
Couple of the round 1 June options had them going to QO when they were doing all the crazy redistricting everywhere but MCPS has repeatedly said that strategy is off the table- and those options are off the table- now that the regional model is part of the boundary study. So yeah, you could say it isn't a complete blindside. Instead it would be an outright lie.
Strategies change based on other needs. Wootton going to Crown was never part of the plan then but then Wootton parents put up a big show with petitions flying around to save their children from an unsafe school. MCPS listened and now you have Option H. And Fields Road community is opposed to going elsewhere than their neighborhood school and who could blame them. MCPS has to listen to them too.
Wootton parents got what they asked for with regards to a safe school. And if Dufief or Travilah has to move to accommodate Fields Road so be it. It makes logical sense that Fields Road goes to Crown, not Dufief or Travilah. You can thank the Wootton parents who circulated those petitions.

That's quite an assumption. Why would you assume it's Dufief and not one of the feeders much further from Crown like Cold Spring or Fallsmead? A-D have Dufief going to Lakelands and then Crown. QO is not currently on the table at all. It also is no longer a clean move of Wootton as a whole to Crown if you kick out a feeder school.
Fallsmead is too big to move to RM and will make RM overcrowded. Cold spring is possible but that’s still not enough to accommodate 300 kids from fields road to Wootton. Dufief is small which means that it’s more flexible to move them anywhere.

When the initial options involving Dufief were given you should have filled those surveys and voiced your concerns and asked for Travilah to be moved instead citing that that community is new. Both are closer to QO than Wootton.
Options E-H all keep Dufief with Wootton. The cluster stays together, including Travillah too. The county must have heard their feedback regarding A-D. Now the question is do they blindside them and kick them back out.
Option A-D are still on table so taking parts of each option and twist one of the main option is what they would do and not blindside anyone.
They won’t present the final option now and final option would for sure be different from any of the options presented so far. There will be rooms for changes so they can claim they listened to the feedback.

Yes. Small, less wealth, more immigrants, a history of the county making promises to the school and breaking them. That must equal flexible.
When the initial options involving Dufief were given you should have filled those surveys and voiced your concerns and asked for Travilah to be moved instead citing that that community is new. Both are closer to QO than Wootton.
