There are many good privates beyond the top five and as mentioned, they blow away the W schools in the rankings. Only one W school in the top 20...the rest are privates, TJ, and a magnet.

Looks like it’s 2 magnets, Whitman, and McLean. And there are no non-magnets until Whitman at #18. Amazing how that can happen, despite no acceleration in math or STEM in general.’It goes:

1. GDS

2. Sidwell

3. TJ

4. NCS

5. BASIS McLean

6. Madeira

7. St Alban’s

8. Holton

9. Potomac

10. Episcopal

11. Landon

12. Maret

13. St. Anselm’s

14. WIS

15. Poolesville

16. Georgetown Prep

17. Rochambeau

18. Whitman

19. Stone Ridge

20. McLean

Ranking has 50% weight for state assessment proficiency, SAT/ACT scores etc. These scores have 1 to 1 relationship with socioeconomic status of families. Obviously only handful of publics are going to appear in such lists.

Private school kids don’t take state tests. But continue to try to justify.

50% weight is for something which is not really telling you much. Ranking has 50% weight for state assessment proficiency, SAT/ACT scores etc.

I am not here to convince you, simply share what I found.

That link is for their school district ranking, not individual school rankings.

The ranking is for individual high schools. Do better when looking at data.

The methodology link PP posted describes their methodology for district rankings.

At least, we established that district ranking of Niche is useless. I couldn't find exact criterion for school ranking and I would love to see that.

You’re trying to justify why public schools do so poorly in a head to head ranking.

Anonymous wrote:Not sure what wealthy means, but net worth 20M plus and kid is in RM cluster. Yes, it's not even W schools which OP was asking, but happy with kid making friend with different socioeconomic background and not growing up in some bubble.

We have never looked at any private, but I think we can afford any private in this area even if we are not considered wealthy.

Too much is made of schools. It's not going to make much difference in life. Love for learning and being curious trumps everything else.

Why did you not look at private?

You aren’t wealthy if you are looking at private school as a ROI.
You are likely well off, but certainly not rich.
Same with homes.

Please do share with us:

1. Which schools you think are top 5.

2. Why you think one should “be careful” with schools outside of that group.

Not the pp, but all private or all public are not great. Anyone claiming that is just debating for sake of debating. You can find the good privates and good publics. You can also find bad private and bad public.

That doesn’t answer my question.

Who are you and what was your question?

If only looking at MCPS, it's only one magnet and Whitman. McLean is a private school in Potomac.
