It is too bad that a student with a disability or a student choosing not to wear a mask will be caught in the middle. But one of these students has a real right at stake and the other doesn't unless you somehow infer that wearing or not wearing a mask is equated with free expression - but there are limits to the First Amendment in public schools. You know that Youngkin is truly committed to upholding civil rights when Miyares fired 30 attorneys in the Office of Civil Rights, including many career civil servants. It's typical for the political appointees to peel off but not the ones who know the ins and outs of the office.

The one silver lining to all this is it will let us know who the dirtbag parents are so we know who should never be included in another birthday party, MNO or other social gathering. If they want their kids to be social pariahs, so be it.

I get that this is rhetorical because Youngkin said on inauguration day that he would govern in the interests of ALL VIRGINIANS not just those who voted for him. You have a right to not have the bulk of the air that unmasked students breath out breathed in by your masked student (because much more will transmit from someone with no mask to someone with a mask vs. from masked to masked, especially if it a KN95/KF94 on both ends). You have a right to sue the school district for not maintaining safety standards aligned with with CDC and local health department recommendations. And if your school district plans to offer an opt-out, you probably can demand that unmasked students be segregated together with unmasked teachers within a school building.


This is utter nonsense.

It just shows he’s looking for headlines, not actually helping our schools.

The best way to keep kids in school during a surge is to mask with high quality masks (along with vax/booster, outside lunch, etc).

My spouse was one of those snookered by the innocuous fleece. Thought he was moderate, reasonable, practical, and not controlled by his base - that he would allow for local control and governance. Many apparently were fooled. He did a good job of dancing around the I'm not Trump/I'm like Trump question and not having a record was helpful.

Yeah, bring in state troopers to escort unmasked students into schools as if this is a civil rights issue. That will be a great look. I hope the people of this esteemed commonwealth do not actually believe that not wearing a mask in an indoor communal setting in the middle of a viral surge is a protected right.
