It peaked around 2017, affects from Covid are still lingering in youth lacrosse participation, and the evolution/affects of year-round club lacrosse are still a big factor. I don't think it will get any worse than what others have pointed out the past few years, but I think this is what we can expect from public school lacrosse in the Nova, PW, Loudoun areas moving forward. The best youth players, will be pulled away from rec lacrosse in elementary school, the best middle school kids will have opportunities at the private schools, and when the average HS Team loses them it has a big impact, as the next man up is a step-down in talent. The programs with solid coaching, and a commitment to the off-season will still be the top 20 schools in our area, with a surprise team from year to year making a run.

In the end, you are seeing the "south" getting stronger in VA lacrosse world. That is a good thing for the state and the sport.

As far as this weekend, I think you will see 3 close games with the following results:

Class 6- Cosby and WP will be a great matchup. Strength against strength with the WP offense vs the Cosby D. As the previous poster said, Cosby is more well rounded, so I have a feeling that Cosby pulls this out in a lower scoring game

Class 5- Indy and Freeman will be a battle and maybe the highest scoring game of the weekend. I believe Indy just has too much depth for Freeman to handle and will pull it out.

Class 4- I don't know much about Salem, but I hear that they are again deeper and more well rounded then LC, who seems centered on 1 attack. I trust my source, so I'll give Salem the win.

Two trophies (4&6) go south and Class 5 stays north.

There’s a tendency I’ve noticed in years where it’s not Robo or Madison hoisting the trophy to disparage the overall talent level in 6A or say it was a down year. Why are we so resistant to giving teams like WestPo and Cosby the credit they’re due? How are we so sure these teams aren’t great?

If Cosby wins that will be the first non-NOVA team that has ever won states at 6A. Cool moment to see a first time state champ win it for their school. Good luck to both teams.

I think Cosby going to beat Wp by a couple of goals. Wp has a great offense but Cosby is more well rounded.

But Robo played Severna Park and they are one of the best teams in the area. And Robo got beaten badly by SP.

Neither one had a private schedule, other than WP stomping BI, so it doesn't show anything. Thanks for stopping by, though.

Robinson's late-season performance was seriously disappointing. I mean, ten goals in the last three games? That's wild! I can't recall a Robinson team managing just two and three goals in the state playoffs since turf fields became the norm. It's like they forgot how to score!

Yes, since West Potomac just beat Robinson and Robinson is averaging four goals a game over its last two.

Averaging….over their last two… yeah that’s how averages work. Take two games and throw out the rest

Yes, that is how averages work. Take the sum of the values of a data set divided by the number. They played two good teams recently and scored five and three goals. That adds up to eight divided by two and averages out to four. Against good defenses they do not score a lot of goals. 7 against Cosby, 4 against Broadneck. Why would I care how many they scored against a terrible defense like Woodson or West Springfield?

Ok, smart guy, average the scores of their three games against West Po this season if you want to pick and choose games to average

No thanks. I wanted to look at their most recent games and that is what I did. Sorry if you don't like it.

Made the right choice. Robinson with another 2 spot tonight. Congrats to Cosby.

Anonymous wrote:VHSL lacrosse is certainly ugly. You work with what you have, and most kids haven't gotten into the sport at a young age so the "talent pool" is very small. The ones who have played since elementary school shine.

One of the problems I have identified, and has been discussed throughout the years is the holding hostage of the game and its growth by father and parental coaching. It is pretty obvious that these parents who get involved in youth league lacrosse, take over entire organizations and manipulate things for them and their boys. They inevitably then leave the organization upside down and destroyed for those that come behind them because they have intimated other parents and volunteers. They are not dedicated to the sport and their response to any objection is "you want to do it better , then you do it" and they masquerade as if they are giving the greatest sacrifice in the world. The sport in our area has been decimated by these ego maniacs and most of the time their kids are just not the best but they get all the playing time and are put in the best positions for success. The kids know it and are embarrassed. It's a shame.

Then end of day we wonder why the other kids and families get disheartened and leave the sport all together to play baseball and soccer.
NVYLL is a train wreck currently. NoVA needs to do better. Will never be LI or Baltimore because just not enough folks care to change things.

Sincerely interested in this as have some (hopefully up-and-coming lacrosse playing) young kids. What are the issues with NVYLL? which orgs do it well vs. not do it well (we may have choice in which org we decided to start with)? I grew up in MD so unfamiliar with the NOVA lacrosse scene. Thanks in advance for sharing the experiences.

Look at the current strong HS programs and you can draw a direct line to the best run NVYLL programs.
West Po: Fort Hunt & ALC
Robinson: Braddock Road
Madison: Vienna
Langley: Great Falls
Yorktown: Arlington

In Loudoun, Dulles South has been feeding the top public high school programs.

NVYLL is dependant on dedicated parents willing to organize and run local programs, most of these parents move on after their kids have completed their youth careers.

West Potomac is all Fort Hunt based. Also, best players tend to go to Gonzaga or SSSAS or Ireton from there.

WP Homer here but in recent Washington Post article Coach Stamos (former youth commissioner and former WP parents who stuck around well after his kids graduated) mentioned specifically kids staying public instead of going private because of the recent culture change and success being a reason for their positive seasons in the last few years.

We need gentlemen like him in our area to be a part of the youth and HS programs.

I don’t like it, I love it! Hate hate hate!

Wasn't intended as hate. Just a simple observation. They haven't put up many goals in their last couple of games. It is not an opinion and wasn't meant to be controversial. Someone asked if the winner of Cosby/Robinson would definitely win the whole thing and I wouldn't say that is a foregone conclusion seeing their recent offensive struggles. They could easily lose to Cosby or West Potomac. I also wouldn't be surprised to see them win both. Should be two close, relatively low scoring games.

Well….
