Why was he over using guest players? Were there just not enough players or did he use them (added)on top of his team roster?

Oh my god, another parent coach? Do they have any actual professional coaches at that whole club?

If your kid was going to make and play on the first team and you are coming from elsewhere, you would have gotten an invite immediately after tryout 1.
