Money well spent.

Motivated kids and kids with motivated parents will do fine and recover from this year in due course. Other students that may have struggled normally will still struggle, but still have the same supports to finish.
There are going to be massive disparities that will directly impact economic opportunities down the line. Rich kids will be prepared for college, poor kids (on average) will not.

If the union is asking MCPS to give teachers more money I don't see why that cannot happen. ughhh!!!!

I thought they were broke as is.
I am so sick of MCPS. They can find money for fru fru stuff but not enough money so that we can have schools open and teachers/staff that want to come back?!!!!
If they cannot get staff they need to increase the summer money or whatever the staff is demanding. As other people have mentioned there is a teacher shortage, NOW.IS.NOT.THE.TIME. for the county to be in a fight with teachers when the rest of us need schools to be open for summer and fall.
Money was not why we didn't return. COVID was. We don't NEED schools open in person, you want them open. We need to have our kids get an education. There is nothing in the rules that says it has to be in person. Teachers did what they were told. They were told to DL. They didn't have the choice so stop blaming them.
Am I the only one who remembers teachers screaming on PAGES facebook page and her and on twitter and on the MCPTA facebook page about how they will die of COVID if schools open? I also remember teachers organizing a drive in rally protesting returning to school and causing traffic jams on Rockville pike. It was MCEA and teachers who obstructed the return to school last July and this entire year. Not MCPS.
I didn’t do any protests, but I was diagnosed with cancer and my immune system found to be in very bad shape during this past school year. And even once I had two shots, I didn’t develop immunity. I could have died if I was in person at my school because we had week after week of cases there. And most of our in person students are not vaccinated. My doctor had me placed on leave when schools reopened in person.
It sounds like the system worked for you since you went on leave. It didn't work for the thousands of 5 year olds that essentially missed kindergarten. There's so much talk about the importance of funding pre-K yet we're told missing K is totally fine and CHILDREN ARE RESILIENT? WTAF.
At my school a lot of families were counseled to have thier child repeat a grade if they had not mastered the content and there's a plan to do a lot of targeted remediation for students can catch up (so having the kids who are behind work with one teacher or para while the on grade level kids work with their teacher).
When I was a kid we learned how to cut and paste in kindergarten and I didn't learn to read until first grade. I'm doing just fine.
Its kinda sad no one at home took the time to work with these kids.

Dear MCPS Staff,
UPDATE: Extended School Year (ESY) comprehensive sites and discrete special education programs are still in need of both teachers and paraprofessionals.
This worries me because these are the kids who are most in need to summer school AND the staff that historically do it willingly every year without an extra pay. The fact that people don’t want to teach ESY this year even with extra pay tells me that teachers and paras feel unsafe or emotionally drained or something else. Maybe in addition to underpaid, but that is not the main issue. DCUM, ask MCPS to look after the special Ed staff. And maybe lay off the verbal abuse.

You're an idiot.
Early childhood teachers: you have GOT to separate people hating DL and people hating on you.
DL is a joke for ES. For those of you who think your students are doing ‘just fine’, they are not. It’s a mess.
Teachers- once you get back to IPL you’ll see that this was a wasted year. I mean/ you already know that. That’s why y’all are clamoring for more money.
It was a waste of everyone’s time. Now, let’s move on

I do not care about the past. I care about now. Let's move on. COVID has moved on and there are plenty of vaccines. People in this area are dragging out the virtual slgnaling way too long. If schools cannot people to work in them, then they need to throw money at the problem or get creative. At this point if the current summer bonus is not working, then they need to offer more money. Everyone has a price, how much is the county willing to shell out so that kids in elementary can be in person.
The MAJORITY of parents, except in the rich schools, choose to keep their kids virtual so stop blaming just MCPS. COVID has not moved on. In this area, number have dropped but its still alive and well in other parts fo the country and around the world. Until it is under control everywhere covid has not moved on. Parents will continue to send in their kids sick, which is a huge issue for some of us. You want child care. Pay for camps this summer or a private academic class, like we are if you are really concerned about how your child is doing. MCPS for 3 weeks of summer school isn't much for any child and pretty worthless.
Even for more money, teachers would still have to pay for child care and many want a break. They are on a 10 month contract. If you have moved on, want summer school, why don't you sign up to teach. Sometimes its not just about the money. There is no way I'd send my kids in person this summer. Its too risky in ES and MS where kids aren't vaccinated and parents like you don't believe covid exists and will not even take the most basic safety precautions.
Just homeschool your kid. The county is at 0.8 cases per 100,000. COVID moved on. Middle and high school students can get vaccinated. Whoever gets sick at this point, it’s on them. Out of thousands of ped infections in MoCo, there were exactly 0 deaths. But you keep on being scared, clearing you finally found a rational reason for your generalized anxiety.
Mcps has an obligation to provide an education. No need to homeschool. Mcps still has Covid cases. It is not just about deaths. My middle schooler is not eligible for the vaccine.
Correction, MCPS has an obligation to provide a quality education. Which includes in person learning as social emotional is just as important as academic. So yes, more money might incentivize those who are on the fence about working summer school.
I can't believe anyone is arguing that virtual kindergarten constitutes "an education". SMH.
Everybody knows virtual Kindergarten was a joke. MCPS should be ashamed it pushed out this crappy product.
But don't worry, kids are resilient.
Definitely moreso than adults here who can't imagine functioning in a geography with 0.8 cases/100,000 residents. Next think you know they'll start demanding DL on days when there's a thunderstorm threat to head off the risk of lightning strikes...
