Maybe it's about families regressing to the mean economically...which involves being less well off than ancestors. Nobody likes that. French castle lady said I wouldn’t actually enjoy owning a medieval castle because the maintenance is too much much money. I believe her because on DCUM, I'm getting ads for French and Italian castles that are available for the price of a big fancy house in Bethesda. It's not a cope if you have a $3M castle but the roof's falling in, the septic system is failing, the plumbing 100 years old and springing pinhole leaks, and it has original electrical wiring. There are no more peasants to command to help you in exchange for vanquishing neighborhood foes.

Most people with second homes travel too. If you have to choose between a second home and travel, then you can't afford the second home.

I have zero desire for a second home. I'd rather spend that money traveling. If I had a second home I would always feel like I "have" to go there on the weekends. I don't want vacations to feel like an obligation.

My family had one we inherited. It cost a fortune to maintain, it was emotional trauma to sell it that people still aren't over 25 years later, and normal people don't get enough vacation to make good use of a second home. They are most suitable for grandparents and the idle rich.

OP, you are just jealous. Snap out of it and be glad you don't have to spend your limited vacation getting a house opened up, repaired, and closed down at the end of the season. Recreational houses near water are also a hazard for young children.

In the last 5 years, I have been getting rid of my various properties in two continents.

I will never ever buy a house I don't live in, or any other kind of real estate. It is a pain to maintain it.

I would never do the vacation cottage or beach house unless I had some serious FU money - and I mean serious FU money where I don't care about the $80,000 to fix the roof on a house I use 6 days a year. And the taxes. F that. I'd rather be in a position to take the fam to Asia or French Polynesia or a good long vacation in Europe. And if I want to go to the old lake or beach, I can AirBNB or VRBO something for that week without the gazillions in costs that come with ownership.

We don’t have FU money, so I’ve come to the conclusion this is the best option. Especially with so many rentals these days.
