Translation: I school hop between McLean and Madison and see lot's of ambitious, hard working South Koreans who play concert piano and get straight As. Immigrants are not a problem in this area!

Wake up.

DP. McLean and Madison are just as much part of FCPS as the Herndon schools.

I am pro-immigration and think we, as Americans should welcome immigrants with open arms to this country. However, to act like there is not a real resource problem in FCPS due to large numbers of immigrants in certain pockets of the county is crazy.

FCPS is now raising teacher salaries and reducing class sizes.

If you are pro immigration, then you should be at least as concerned with state policies that redirect taxes paid by NoVa residents to benefit white students in rural counties in Virginia as you are with humanitarian efforts to educate youths fleeing much worse conditions in Central America.

70 additional kids per year at Herndon middle.

So, that and the 41 at Hutchison is more than 100. And, that is just one community.

That's well over $1.5 million dollars --and that is a conservative estimate. For one small area of Fairfax County. And, that is just money spent by the school system. That does not cover other expenses being absorbed by Fairfax County residents.

No. No crisis at the border.

And it’s also telling that those railing against ESOL students quickly default to an extreme example - a 17-year-old with a fourth-grade education from a non-English speaking country - as if that were the norm rather than the exception. Yes, those are tough situations.

Talk to the high school ESOL teachers. Not so rare as you think.

And, how do you explain the 41 kids since September to Hutchison? You think they don't require lots of extra help? Funds? That's just one school. Equivalent of two classroom teachers and special needs and ESOL, too.

Again, it’s off-putting how meeting the needs of some kids is considered “extra” or a “drain” in your book. It cost money that could have been used on other things to pay for your kids’ education as well.

I can guarantee any extra money IF there is extra money is not going to help the kids (my kids) already in the school. You're kidding yourself if that's how you see things.

True! And the school board is well aware and wants to instead talk about equity...well, illegal immigration is draining school resources and pulling the schools down. Parents are illiterate in their native language and aren't learning English. But, you are racist if you mention this (cue the posts that will label me as such) or articulate your concerns. We have 18 year old high school freshmen who are legally emancipated. Pregnant middle school girls. Sorry, but illegal immigration is precisely WHY FCPS are circling the drain. Look at Falls Church HS, Herndon HS, Luther Jackson MS, Hutchison ES as examples of schools on the edge. I would move before sending my DC to these schools.

I don’t think you’re racist. I think you have the guts to talk about what has and is going on in the school system. A LOT of kids are getting left behind and it’s time we came together as a community to find a solution.

I think you’re both anti-immigrant racists who post on an anonymous forum because you know your views are regressive and outdated.

NP. I think it’s impossible to point out that immigration has very large near term costs and less measurable long term benefits. It’s only ok to talk about the latter because talking about the former makes everyone feel uncomfortable. The truth is that our schools are not generally not prepared to educate 17 year olds with a fourth grade education in the native language.

There are certainly economists capable of addressing the long-term benefits of immigration and, in turn, the challenges that aging countries with declining birth rates like Japan and Italy are facing.

Far easier to medicate than to instill structure and discipline and limits. And, teachers really need to stop armchair diagnosing.

Nothing presages a ridiculous post from a grumpy old fart better than the word “snowflake” in the first four or five words.

Go drink your wine cooler, grandma.

Nothing concludes a ridiculous post from a snarky young twit better than the ageist "grandma" slur in the closing sentence. You're disgusting.

Ha. Now we find out who is really easily triggered, and it’s not the kids.

Regardless....you're still disgusting.

How many children from Central America are we on the hook for educating? What number would be too many for you? I don't think the people on here are racist, I think they are just pointing out the issue of the large numbers of needy students coming to Northern Virginia. At what point does it become too much? Do you have an answer? How much has your school been impacted?
