In addition to the idiosyncrasies and subjective aspects of USNWR ranking, in a world of 3,000 colleges, #18 and #28 are, in fact, close.
Both top-notch. As for which is "better" it depends on the individual student or program. To claim otherwise defeats the value of the rankings themselves, and sounds ignorant.
That's why there is so much relative movement between peers from year to year.
I think this is a very good point.

Michican, as good as it is, is just a good public school. Good for them. They are something which all public unis can aspire to be.

But did you consider it “Yale level”?
Better than Yale in terms of education, small classes, access to profs who are student focused, close-knit community, research opportunities. But the "most prestigious midwestern college"? No. I felt there are just as good, even better, liberal arts colleges in the midwestern states.
Most prestigious by every objective metric. Check it out.
Agree. Haven't heard a bad thing about it (except that it's cold in winter).

Norte Dame, as good as it is, will always just be the Harvard for Catholics. But good for them. They are something for religiously affiliated school to aspire to be.
Notre Dame is not aspiring to be Harvard, that is silly. Been to both campuses and they are completely different in terms of geography, structure and culture.
Here is a thought: Any kid who goes to Michigan, Notre Dame or UChicago is likely an exceptional student. What they make of their college education is what matters, not the "perceived" ranking.

uhh, does Notre Dame not? Their endowment is larger than Michigan's. On a per-student basis, it's MUCH higher.

NP - There are certain metrics used by USNWR that make it nearly impossible for public universities to rank very high. Even Berkeley, which is an amazing school, only ranks 21st. Oddly, USNWR's own global rankings have Berkeley at 4 in the world and Michigan at 17 in the world.
