They paid for it (willingly or not) to the satisfaction of the owner.
They did not file a police report.
So, why the overkill police involvement? The only explanation is that Brazil is embarassed. Who the hell cares if Lochte says he was robbed and he was or wasn't or it was his interpretation? He didn't name a person. It isn't slander. I can say I'm the queen of England and that doesn't make it true, but it doesn't mean my passport should be confiscated either.
It's a matter of honor. Yes, Brazil legit has terrible crime. But you don't get to lie about it and trash talk them and say this lie on national TV. If Lochte were a gentleman he would apologize. But he has no honor. No surprise there.

Please. There is absolutely no one on this thread who sounds like they came from Fairfax Underground.
Many of us think Lochte is a complete dumbass, but a) was robbed (AS VIDEO BACKS UP) & b) doesn't deserve to be trapped in Brazil over this.
Well, he's not trapped in Brasil so I guess he's come out ahead on it all.
You actually do sound like a FFU if you remotely believe that these assholes were robbed or that they deserve no consequences.

Having two security guards hold guns on you demanding money seems like a robbery. Doesn't it? That's in the video, and admitted by the Rio police.
No, it doesn't you moron. They vandalized those people's property. The police didn't demand money--the athletes were trying to buy them off.
If someone smashed up your little redneck roadhouse I'm pretty sure you'd pull a gun on them, beat them up and take their money and call it justice.

The thing is, the police were not involved, then, and there's no reason to involve them now. The gas station isn't pressing charges, the swimmers didn't file a police report. Now they are being indicted for...
If someone smashed up a restroom, armed guards demand and receive payment, then that's that. Done. No confiscation of passports, charging with false reporting.
American here--It's hilarious how Americans think that they should get to decide what other countries laws are or how they should be construed. Arrogant.
