If their parents came to me talking about a new school option they were considering and I looked into it and saw that it was nearly completely white or 100% white, I would strongly recommend that they reconsider. Well, ok, I would only do that if they asked me my opinion, otherwise I would just think that in my head. I think it's extremely hard to be an "only" or 1 of a very few. Especially at middle school and high school. Not such a big deal at the PS level where they don't even notice/care.
I think it's erroneous to feel that E-H and Eastern somehow NEED white people to succeed, but I do think that it makes for a better social environment to have diversity. Actual diversity. Some black, some AA, some mixed, some Asian, some Hispanic. Diversity. Some rich, lots of middle, some poor. I was impressed with the presentation and my kids have been in many situations where they have been the only and that's been fine. Totally different story when it comes to middle school where all the kids are studying each other and trying to find differences and trying to figure out who they are...
I, for one, am happy to roll up my sleeves and continue to help, but I won't do it in an atmosphere in which I am made to feel unwelcome.
New poster. It is erroneous, pp. You certainly won't see a highly successful DCPS middle school without strong white participation for the simple reason that white is a proxy for upper-middle-class in this city. Without affluent parents on board in large numbers, at least one-third of families behind the school, the institution will struggle endlessly on many levels, I admire you for being willing to roll up your sleeves, but picking your battles counts for more.
