Moving will not make a difference. If you have a new wisc score, then that might make an appeal worthwhile.

Yes, there’s still time for a WISC and it provides really helpful info on your child’s learning strengths/ weaknesses etc, but I’d call soon to book it. You’ll hear on this forum that the committee will only except GMU for WISC but we had a successful appeal with a private WISC … in addition to submitting new work samples, and other school testing done after the packet was compiled.

As a mom of a 1st grader looking at this, what kind of work samples are all considered?

The AART will tell you at the AAP meeting in the fall. They all give the same presentation with the same slides and the same information. You can ask for more details then.

We had pictures of things our kid loved to build using different materials in the house. We put together a series of pictures we took when they were building something and showed the different materials, what they experimented with, and what the final product looked like. We included a few sentences with each picture. We thought demonstrating the love of engineering at home and experimenting at home showed their curiosity outside the school environment.

They want work samples that demonstrate academic skills, creativity, and critical thinking. So a math worksheet that is just rote memorization is not a good work sample, but one that shows your child's thought process is good.

There are 6 work samples included in the portfolio and only 2 can come from home; the rest have to be submitted by the school. It'll usually be a mix or subjects (writing, math, science, social studies).

As work gets sent home, keep an eye out for things you think would make good samples. And tell your child's second grade teacher early that you are planning to recommend for full time AAP so the teacher can be thinking about which work samples are best throughout the fall.
