What's the difference between a "Park Authority" rec center and a "teen center" and a "community center"?

I have never heard of any of this wonderful, free programming for teens and kids. Where is this information published?

Open gym for teens for an hour once every two weeks kind of thing. Building a brand new rec center with no playground, why??? Growing up, rec centers were open for kids to hang out, there were soccer goals outside, ping pong, atari, etc and the gyms were always free for pickup (it seems Sully rents their courts out to private groups).

Right? This is a huge reason the after school middle school programs are needed. It's the only structure a lot of kids have after school. Otherwise what are they going to do? Go home to an empty house and rot in front of the TV most likely. This is the time in their lives they are most likely to be introduced to drugs, alcohol, risky behaviors. So disappointed that cutting these programs is even being discussed. FCPS and the county should be making this a priority instead of pointing fingers and passing the buck. Disgraceful behavior from our elected officials.

A big reason NCS put the middle school after school program up for cuts, is because NCS already offers free programming for teens at their community centers and teen centers (not to be confused with Park Authority’s Rec Centers). NCS also offers limited transportation. Can it totally replace the MSAS program, probably not. But it offers an alternative.

It doesn't sound like that's a very popular program. NCS should cut that. As pp noted, the rec centers do not offer much at all for MS or teens. No one knows about this mystery program they offer or their 'limited transportation'. It makes much more sense to provide the after school programming where the students are...at school.

This is ridiculous.

Nobody needs incompetent, unaccountable, uninformed people making decisions anywhere. Have you seen how many mistakes doge has made?

Maybe so. But if they cut middle school programs, I'm going to be asking for some accountability. You're telling me they can afford a $6M equity office, but they can't afford to offer programs to our middle school kids? They can afford a boundary review that nobody wants or cares about? They can afford to turn their noses up at federal funding?

Are you actually engaging your brain and asking good questions?

ARE YOU STUPID? FCPS AND COUNTY BUDGETS - TWO SEPARATE THINGS

The ducking m*orons on this board. No wonder the school system is failing, the parents are all complete idiots. There's no one to help the kids do their homework and god forbid a parent choose to advocate for their child. Timid little whiny millennials don't do anything except coddle their children like they're infants and expect the schools to do everything else. .

Fcps could assume responsibility for the afterschool program and pay for it.

This is what needs to happen. It seems clear the county isn't interested in helping. It's worth reminding everyone that members of our BOS are elected, not appointed, and many of them probably have higher political aspirations. Think about their priorities next time you vote.

I wrote to mine and she dismissed it - she said NCS proposed the cut and there was nothing she could do.

The BOS is getting irritated that FCPS is making no cuts. They keep adding onto budget requests but not actually making any cuts. I think if FCPS made some cuts things would be different.

I agree cuts could be made in FCPS, especially at the top. The BOS and our other elected officials also need to do their part and tell the rest of the state to start funding themselves. It's time to get off the NOVA gravy train.

The county’s budget proposes $60 million in cuts. MSAS is just one of them and would save $4 million. Fcps cut nothing and asked the county for the highest transfer ever.

I don't feel like we get much from the county. The cost of MSAS is not high. I don't see why this program was singled out for cutting.

It's odd that the county has been paying for it all this time. FCPS where are our tax $ going?

Meridian is not FCPS

That was her point. Nearby school systems have much nicer facilities.

That's not allowed. You are supposed to "what about" any doubts you have away.
