Plan for a small increase in size, add the kids, the quality doesn’t decline (they are all top), in-state admission rate and number goes up, residents are happy (until others start complaining), and so on. Not unreasonable for a public university, and an expensive one at that.

UVA added 1000 first years in the last decade. They've built new dorms, but the first year areas are full.

Seems like they could figure out how to add another 100-200 then with some basic planning.

Well if all of these kids are as good as people are claiming, then yeah. If there are VA kids with genuinely top stats, rigor, etc., that are getting rejected, then yeah. UVA is small for a “flagship” and its in-state acceptance rate is middling for a top public. Seems weird to take a stance that it’s the absolute perfect size as is.

MIT is private with a hige admissions office to process applications and can do what it wants and doesn't publish the criteria as UVA but wants the very top students too! UVA is public with a limited admussions office and still processes 50k applications a year. It needs to be more transparent because it is a public and reports to SCHEV. Virginua schools are very transparent which is much better than UCLA's "who the hell knows". and there arenany other options to public in VA. There is only ine MIT. apples and oranges. UVA has a public mission

You're right - UVA isn't a private institution. They are public, and they seem to be making it incredibly hard to get accepted for no particular reason. Make it exclusive by all means! But there are other measures of potential success besides all AP's and straight A's. But it's fine - let's see what happens when they cram their school with stressed out kids who are barely holding on to their mental health.

Uva’s bar is not quite as high as ivy/+ , but they all expect top rigor in all areas and all or almost all As(the exact grades depend in context of the high school). UVA is not being unreasonable. Over two dozen kids go each year from our school. Another handful get in and turn it down for a higher ranked private. These kids and similar ones at schools across the state and country are doing all the things, and sports/arts, and leadership and volunteering and and …the majority are mentally healthy and are not “barely holding on”. If a kid is barely holding on they should not be taking the hard courses and doing all the things. There are so many who can juggle it all and do not have to sacrifice much sleep(save AP week). These top students are encouraged to take hard courses by the teachers(not the parents pushing) and later are encouraged apply to uva. A subset of them are encouraged to shoot for ivies/mit/stanford , anywhere they want. So many parents on here crying it’s not fair what UVA wants, when UVA and all T25s want the same high achieving kids who can handle the rigor. If it seems undoable and unfair then these are not the schools that fit. There are so many other schools that will be a less academically competitive environment ; pick differently

But are they being discouraged from applying? This kid is being told don't bother.

If the CCO is a good one, and is discouraging applying to UVA in state for a kid who is “working his tail off and has a few APs” , then it means the kid is nowhere close. And it would be a horrible fit if that few APs makes him work that hard. It was a lot easier when parents went: there is much more competition now. UVa admits unhooked kids from the top25% or even below at our HS—about 20% of the total enrollment end up going. The top 5-10% turn it down for ivy/+ or they never apply because they ED somewhere higher or a WASP lac. Counselors do actively discourage kids with 3.9uw and 3-5 APs from applying to UVA. Why? At a school where so many get in? Because that unweighted with that rigor is around average or even below. JMU or VCU is where they end up, or Auburn or UTK. The kids who get in UVA have 8-12 APs and may have 3.9uw or 3.8 but their weighted is much higher so they are top quarter or close. Unless the counselor is terrible, it means the kid is not close at all.

Many classes, students, activities at UVA are crazy competitive even after being admitted and attending so chances are a kid who didn’t want to work too hard in HS will be miserable and/or struggle there even if admitted.

I know a kid who is working his tail off in HS, is making good grades, has a few AP's, and is a great student with amazing work ethic and EC's. His counselor is saying UVA isn't an option so he shouldn't apply. In his home state. The parents went to UVA. That doesn't seem off to you? And before everyone turns around and says, "He should apply!" Go back to title of this thread and read what AO's are saying.

DP. That doesn’t seem off to me. My husband and I both went to UVA. So didn’t the parents of a handful of other top students at my junior’s high school. They’re all taking essentially the same AP-heavy course load. They won’t all get in. It’s fine. If ours doesn’t, she’ll go elsewhere.

It seems like UVA could solve this problem by admitting a few hundred more VA kids a year. Plan for a small increase in size, add the kids, the quality doesn’t decline (they are all top), in-state admission rate and number goes up, residents are happy (until others start complaining), and so on. Not unreasonable for a public university, and an expensive one at that.

What about the kid who made wise choices about their course load because they love their sport and they work part-time and value being a human being on the weekends instead of spending hours and hours on homework, test prep, tutoring? Not quite. The top students in the country don’t want to pay 62k oos tuition for a state flagship. UVA is their backup, which is why oos yield is so poor.

UVA had approximately 42,540 OOS applicants and a 12% admissions rate for OOS in 2023-2024. I’d say plenty of top students from across the country are willing to pay OOS tuition to attend. UVA is almost nobody’s backup.

FWIW, I think other state flagships have more name recognition and gravitas than UVA. The UC system for instance - getting into UCLA is impressive, and it wouldn't take much to convince my Aunt Mary in Indiana about that. UVA would be a harder sell.

So a couple of other schools? Only UCLA, Cal, Michigan, and UNC are really in the discussion. Don't think UVA is trying to lure in Aunt Mary in Indiana.

If he indeed only has a few APs, then the counselor probably knows the odds. And legacy doesn’t count for anything anymore.

That’s unfortunate and maybe the CCO isn’t the best. Kid should apply anyway if they want to.
