I lived there and really liked it but it was years ago. Has it gotten worse? I think it's a cool city with many interesting neighborhoods. It's walkable, full of History.
Not the pp, but it has gotten much worse. I used to take my children to Philly fairly often 10-20 years ago, and we enjoyed it very much. Went back earlier this year, and while the usual tourist places are fine, once you go beyond them, it is very bleak. There is a menacing vibe to the city that wasn't there before. I didn't feel safe. I actually saw someone who was mugged. Very disheartening to see

Santorini - way overrated & crowded
Bangkok - great sights but the traffic was awful and getting around sucked, dishonest taxi drivers
Istanbul - also great sights but wasn't overly impressed
Tokyo - same as above
For people saying places like Vegas, Miami or even Cancun. You have to manage your expectations when going to these places. These are heavy touristy places and thats what they cater to. But what I will say is that I feel like you have to go get to know these places and find your "jam" - after you've been a few times you find your favorite places to go, fave restaurants, activities etc. Can't really get that in 1 visit. Same with NYC. Yes its crowded, parts are dirty etc. But NYC also has 8 million people what do you expect? The food and culture and diversity in NY is unparalleled hands down. Anyone would say Brooklyn is soulless has no idea what they're talking about and was probably there for a couple hours max.

We were not there in the winter, maybe that's why? I still cannot pinpoint exactly why. Everyone else had a fine enough time, and I went along, but it felt off. Low vibration strange. I've never felt like that anywhere else. And I grew up rural.
