They are claiming it will be required for everyone by 10th grade in their new essential concepts I-II-III for grades 8-10, while saying it should be just an option.
They can't claim a path to calculus if algebra 2 is not taken by 10th grade.

I like the additional math credits for the upper grades.

The problem is that the normal acceleration is to have algebra 2 in 10th grade. Yes it is faster in LCPS and FCPS, but for most places that's it.
This is also what they are claiming is in their regular classes.
So the accelerated kids who aren't super smart in math would no longer be accelerated. By the time they have finished the new classes, they will be hopelessly behind and not ready for precalc and calculus.

Yes, geometry is also in essentials (that’s one main goal - to blend).

And algebra 1 topics would be ~8th grade in default track. But schools can accelerate so that can happen in earlier grades for accelerated kids.

This could be done for advanced classes, but they are wanting this for everyone.
With an honors vs regular it could be done, but with everyone expected to take the classes, it would be watered down and mostly algebra would be pushed to the Math 9(now essential concepts II).
