Anyway, update.

First kids mom has come grovelling back asking over the course of three emails if her kid could please join the beach house. She apologized profusely and claimed she'd been emotional when she sent the email. Answer was "Too bad, so sad"

Three other boys have since come forward asking if they could rent the other bunks in the bunk house and they got into a bidding war- offering $2000 each. DH and BILs said no because of the septic system. I thought they were foolish because for 7k you could almost replace the system which is nearing its end of life anyway.

So- here's the takeaway if you're a mom. Keep your gossipy mouth shut and play nice. Because it will cost your kid socially big time.

Some people have enormous homes and lots of extra room and feel like entertaining a guest for months on end. That’s a very small group. That don’t have a tiny old cottage.

You must have grown up very poor or been raised by stingy people to be so worried about the nominal cost of having a friend use water and electricity for the summer. “I want a friend nearby, so please stay in the shed behind my beach house so I won’t be lonely. P.S. You’ll need to pay me.” There’s no way to spin that that doesn’t sound like a major social feau pas. Sure, the kid should definitely contribute something in exchange for staying on their property, but this was handled very poorly.

I agree. The sad thing is the son and friend are probably now embarrassed beyond belief. They may not find jobs and probably only p/t at that age.

Does this old house have smoke detectors, and fire extinguishers? Are the smoke detectors frequently checked? That would be my main concern if I allowed guests to use it from time to time.
