Years ago, we went to Dewey and Rehoboth. All of the hotels were super expensive. Finally found one on Dewey that was affordable. Turned out that it had the bay in its backyard and the kids had so much fun playing and exploring. They still talk about it.

They buy campers they tow. Stay at campgrounds. Things like that.

They don't rent 5 bedroom cottages blocks from the beach.

I know several people who bought car campers or RVs. Those with 3 kids and dogs have the larger RVs and do camping many long weekends throughout summer. My friend who is a single mom and teacher has a car camper and does a 3 week road trip with her kid all over saying at campgrounds she books way ahead of time and using her yearly waterpark passes she gets for these trips.

They wake up from their Disney or Fantasy Island dream without an empty bank account because they still believe Mickey Mouse is their forever friend who comes to their rescue with a dance.
Their dysfunctional choices are all around.

There are countless answers to this. People do what they can and hopefully that matches up with what they actually like.

My family didn’t take a vacation every year. When we did, they weren’t splash outs. Usually we stayed in modest hotels or with relatives or very close family friends. I remember going to Ocean City, NYC, and Philly. Otherwise, it was visiting relatives who had farms —a welcome break from West Baltimore.

DH’s only vacations growing up were to stay with relatives. The attraction was the people they got to spend time with rather than the physical setting.

They don’t stay at oceanfront property. They stay 2-4 blocks back from the ocean and enter at a public entrance. Some stay at a relative’s house and just drive in for the day.
