No one cuts like Armani
+1, if the fit on those is good, they're worth a splurge. What's the alternative, buying not quite right black pants on discount year in year out. That adds up. And most people grab a few extra things every time they step in a discount store, it's not hard to rack up $400 in junk.
God I hate when people with sufficient money opine on the worth of purchases for poor people. When they talk about how expensive it is to be poor, this is one of the things they're talking about. DH and I weren't even poor (except by DCUM standards), but we did with Target, Lands End and Goodwill clothes. It would take us four trips to Target over several months to spend $400 because we didn't have the discretionary income to spend. $400 pants aren't worth a splurge if you haven't got $400 laying around for a single pair of pants, and literally most of us don't.

Completely agree with OP! I hate how v necks are basically non existent and that boxy shapeless tops are the norm. I dont shop anymore, although thank goodness for the Portofino shirts at Express. That's all I wear to work these days with pencil skirts and pants from Ann Taylor loft.

I agree wi PP who said they like Reiss. I just discovered it & although expensive, they have simple, classic work wear. Between that & Theory I'm happy -- but I can wear very casual clothing to work most days so I don't need to buy much. Also agree wi PP that I love consignment/thrift stores.

Great post. I definitely relate to #1 and #5.
I would add the in-between size for heights. I am exactly average height for American women. Petites are too small for me. Regular is way too long on me (unless I'm wearing 6" heels, which I'm not), and requires tailoring of all pants. I love the Land's End work pants, because you order your inseam and it comes pre-tailored. I can't understand why more retailers can't do that.
And I totally second the idea of dressy shoes that are more comfortable and fit people with a wider foot. Most dress shoes look like they were made for someone whose feet were bound as a child.
I'm tall, with long legs, and can't wear the regular length either. I need tall inseams, and not many brands make them. Many that do only offer them online, so I can't try on in store.

You can get wool, lined pants for half that price, though. Probably less.
