Welcome to Virginia. Police are pretty much exempt from FOIA here and don't really have to disclose anything to the public. Virginia scored an "F" (47th out of 50 states) for transparency and accountability in a recent ranking.

Right now Alexandria is so immersed in the fight over bike lanes on King Street that they are not acting rationally in this situation. Their priorities are skewed.

That should say, I'm NOT surprised the release of the 911 tapes was an error.

APD is never transparent, so I'm surprised that the 911 calls were erroneously released.

I wish we as a city and community could mobilize some kind of effort to demand opening things up to the public.

Apparently, it was a "clerical error" by the City that the 911 tape was released. The police are not happy.

WTF, City of Alexandria? I know it's easy to armchair quarterback, but everything about this case seems so disorganized.

The 911 operator was ridiculous demanding that the neighbor go over and physically haul the caregiver out of the home. And it doesn't seem like a good idea to suggest a random bystander go into a situation with an intruder.

+1 On the patience of that neighbor. Very surprising that a 911 operator would instruct him to go and try to rescue the caregiver with a possible intruder still on the scene.

Apparently the caregiver was distraught and had run back inside of that house to try and help the woman who had been shot. And it seems as though the caregiver also helped her elderly patient to safety which was an incredibly brave thing to do.

The caregiver was described in the 911 call as a black woman. I think she ran to the neighbor's because she had been shot and wanted to get away from imminent danger. If I had been randomly shot, I'd be hysterical.

Out of curiosity, what name did Ruthanne Lodato go by? Was it Ruth, Anne or Ruthanne?
