Kids want to be with friends they know and they all think HS is just club 2.0 and it isn’t.

It’s a zero sum game, and they don’t realize the grad year above you and two years above you are already there and just as talented.


This is so true. The girls and parents of 8th graders who start on a good club team believe that means they will make and contribute to varsity as freshman at A conference schools.

They are coming into programs that have top players in each grad year above them. Bigger, faster and with more experience. It takes a special talent to excel as a 14 year old competing against 15-18 year olds. So they go to Maryvale, McD, SPSG and assume they will be a star out of the box. It’s nuts.

Bar for admission is lower than for many other schools and price tag (pre-financial aid, scholarship, etc) is more affordable.
I think everyone in the region knows the deal with MV. No need to rub it in. If they want to pick a school for lacrosse, that's their business. The school isn't quite as rigorous academically as some others, but it's not a bad school.

I’m guessing you did not follow the MV JV season. They blew out most teams except for the tie against Spaulding. MV played most of the 2nd half down because of too many yellow cards and was still winning with a minute left.


Can you really draw anything from JV? Especially on top teams whose bench is deep enough that they will pull from there first. With some exceptions, of course. Also, some teams take all players with potential on varsity, whereas others don’t. Just don’t know that it’s an apples to apples situation.

All this tells me is that at Maryvale there will always be a ton of talent that doesn’t get utilized because you can only have so many players on the field at once.


What a waste for many of them.

The good programs will fill the gaps created by the losses. The ones who bet it all on one year will fall off. McDonogh was supposed to struggle in 2023 because of an historically strong 2022 class graduating. They ended up wining the title and went undefeated in the conference. Sometimes the talent is on the bench waiting their turn.

Do think MV didn’t have room to take all talented freshman. Seemed to prioritize Coppermine freshman for some reason, but there are a few who should bump up. Especially with new coach - who knows which middle of the depth chart players will get a shot.

JV rosters are full of sophs and juniors who most likely will never contribute to a varsity roster.

Some freshmen will because it was better to get reps on JV than watch on varsity because of roster sizes.

You can’t use JV success to connect to varsity success in coming seasons.

My freshman on JV lost to a team 16-3, on varsity the next two years it was a one goal game both times.

In fact I’d say only about 6 kids from that JV team ever stepped foot on varsity.
