- Be in 2025, we are broke as a state and county, MCPS pillaged due to neglect, we hire a competent Superintendent to fix the ship, he's actually good. DOGE causes contraction in the county because Maryland/MoCo largely rely on Federal funding. The county population is actually declining and people that can actually afford to live in Wootton don't have kids or their kids already graduated
- Be heard by the Superintendent, Wootton can't wait, the conditions are so bad. A compromise solution actually appears - Woottton @ Crown. Wootton HS would actually remain in tact while not having to wait another decade to get a brand new state of the art school.
- Every school in the Wootton cluster goes and has room with the exception of Cold Spring (they don't care because they get to go to Churchill). Notice how Wootton PTSA isn't even advocating for them anymore in any of their testimonies - it's no longer about keeping the cluster together
- The record should show that when the initial option for Wootton at Crown came up, Wootton PTSA wanted to take a neutral position, in fact, it was seen as a WIN. However, the bullying and anger has won over to try and have Wootton fixed. It is no longer a dire issue to the point where students can't breathe, can't go to school, don't want to use the bathrooms because the conditions are so bad. We can fix Wootton with patch work, we don't want a new school anymore.
- They hold a town hall, there is an angry mob of people - people are scared to speak up about the options - there is no point in even speaking about the county budget situation or the realities of Wootton - it is an actual horrible horrible environment for kids. Many people who are angry don't have kids that are even in school anymore
- The claim is Rockville will chip in money to fix Wootton, go with hybrid option. This seems like a great solution, new school costs $300M. Fixing up a school costs ~$50-$100M.
- Ignore the fact that there is roughly only 500 students that are within the walking zone of Wootton, Wootton HS population is ~1800. Ignore the fact that Rockville is up in arms, but Wootton actually draws from North Potomac, Gaithersburg, and Rockville. No one else's opinion matters in this.

Wootton can now wait, but they need money to fix the school, apparently Rockville politicians will find money. Let's put these politicians on the record and ask households who are zoned for Richard Montgomery, Rockville HS, Magruder, Twinbrook if they are willing to pay an increase in taxes to fix Wootton when there is a brand new HS being built already opening in 2027.

Let's put Senator Kagan on record that she is speaking out only for Rockville and not for Gaithersburg, Fields Rd, Lakewood communities.

Let's put the county council and executives on the record that in a time where taxes are going to be raised because again WE ARE BROKE - that Wootton HS will not accept a new school where the ENTIRE CLUSTER gets to move to a BRAND NEW SCHOOL that they have been advocating about and instead let's ask CLARKSBURG, POOLESVILLE, WHEATON, GERMANTOWN, SILVER SPRING communities if they are willing to have an increase in their taxes to pay for a Wootton renovation.

I want everyone to read this who don't have a dog in this fight to ask yourself if you are willing to see an increase in your taxes to pay for a Wootton remodel when Crown exists.

Wow thanks for this. Not interested in more taxes. Signed, a lifelong City of Rockville resident that isn't at Wootton

Isn’t the entire Rockville CIP about 30 million? Can’t imagine a tax increase and timeline that would be realistic to fund a full reno

It’s all false hope and those latching onto it just can’t see the truth

👏 +1 another City of Rockville resident who will be royally p.o'd if I have to pay more in taxes for these entitled Wootton parents. As a PP noted, most of Wootton cachement isn't even in the City of Rockville.

The programs will be capped at each school, set capacity.

I was googling to see if there are other counties in Us with this model and couldn’t find? Shouldn’t this be piloted before implementing at such a scale

Taylor did implement this model in his previous district with only one region (previous district only has 6,HSs). He left before the model rolled in, and that model rolled in with 3-steps, one or two new programs every year. With that, the school bus system collapsed which made the news. Now residents have to opt in for school bus with a spring deadline. If you move in in summer or make decisions later on, you aren’t allowed to ride school bus. The quality of those programs is still not assessed yet.

Yes, you can watch the video here:

Anyone able to summarize? Was it all/mostly anti-H or mixed? Did any Board members say anything interesting?

Definitely a mix but more for H than against, though not that many more so a good balance. Some cute kid videos - I like hearing from the kids!

👏 well said. Heck, even ask people in other parts of Rockville other parts of Gaithersburg other parts of North Potomac Potomac Bethesda everywhere in the county nobody should be paying more property taxes because some families and Reut don’t want to move to a school nearby. that’s brand new and they’ve been clamoring for fixes for years. I agree had enrollment been different in 2019 or whenever it was that crown was first approved. I don’t think they would’ve made the decision to build it but instead perhaps would have done a renovation to Wootton and Magruder instead. So I get it’s frustrating, change is hard. But the change is actually very logical. All the arguments about costs being less to keep things as is are just whack. Then arguments about future development don’t really hold short to near term validity. Those developments are planned or approved, doesn’t mean they get built. Given the county councils decision to impose the rent control laws, MFH construction has slowed to a halt here.

People also need to realize that MCPS can’t make decisions without impacting the county as a whole. MD and MoCo are already losing people in droves to VA and other states. Much of this is wealthy retirees or empty nesters. For every taxpayer we lose who is replaced by another taxpayer with far less income, our state and county lose out. This acceleration has occurred significantly over the past few years, but I’ve noticed even more this past year ever since the MD General Assembly and Governor decided to raise taxes so MD is now one of the highest top tax rates in the country whereas before it was maybe middle of the pack. I work in financial services and deal with clients and see this happening at increasing frequency over the past six to twelve months.

So no, MoCo shouldn’t raise taxes further because it'll just accelerate its decline.

FWIW I’m a lifelong resident of MoCo and a center left Democrat.

MCPS listened and is moving Wootton to a brand new building. Big win. Now, if they'd only do the right thing and bring back the virtual school. They clearly have the money.
