Yes, they can manage getting to school.

Much different than carrying a backpack and walking a mile

My kids haven’t been out before 11 so things aren’t as cold and they can see the ice. My HSer will not be walking in this mess at 6:55 on Monday morning

For all of you out there saying people are “lazy” because they are still snowed in clearly don’t think about peoples experiences other than their own and that’s always been the problem with MoCo. Given my own parking lot, seeing an abled bodied 20 something slip and hit his head, etc I don’t see how it’s safe to open on Monday. But because you’re perfect, your kids can magically walk without slipping, and your street looks good, everyone else’s life should align!

It's not "concrete". It's snow. Get a shovel and get to work. If you're too lazy or in too poor physical shape, then pay someone else to do it. I don't think any of us found shoveling this fun, but we did it anyway. You can too.

You're an angry person. Can you even read? I wasn't complaining I can't leave. I was simply relaying my own experience for the sycophants such as yourself obsessed with calling everyone else lazy when they don't even know the situation. I've been back for less than 3 hours, you need to calm down.

You're being ridiculous. Snow is not concrete. Ice isn't even concrete, although what we have isn't that. People can shovel. People can walk on sidewalks, cleared or not. They can walk through yards when they need to. It is fine for school to open.

Different PP. Do you live in a different county where it was mostly snow no no ice? Because most of MoCO has so much compacted SNL and ice that it might as well be concrete.

Hey, if the sheep can slip and slide, why not the kids?

Yeah, you're right. Carrying a bulky sled in your hands is much worse than a backpack with shoulder straps.

We’re not going to agree because this clearly isn’t about backpacks anymore. A mile walk on icy sidewalks isn’t safe or easy for a child, and most parents understand that without needing it explained.

You really don't get out much. Parents and kids have been doing that all week. You can't sled without walking through the snow! Most people don't have a sledding hill in their backyard, so they have to walk a while to get to one. With sleds.

I don't know if it's fear of snow, or just a dislike of the cold, but you're not thinking rationally here.

OK? You realize that snow and those embankments are going to be around for a while, right? And that it isn't practical to cancel school until the spring?

If you don't think your kids can handle themselves reasonably safely-- and playing in the snow isn't some uniquely deadly risk-- then you should take responsibility for getting them to school.

Even if we do open on Monday, i am not teaching any new material in my class until i have at least 75% of my class in attendance. We will do independent study, reading, or team building activities until then. I am not going to be forced to teach everything twice.

The problem is it is not going to get better anytime soon. The conditions could be bad for a month or more. MCPS needs to weigh the harms of an extended closure, which are considerable, against the hazardous conditions and potential injuries that may result. It's not an easy answer honestly. In a week I don't think conditions will be much better..maybe marginally.
