Taylor thanked Celine. What else should she have done?

The show made me dislike Miley. The song is fine but she is immature and just not appealing.

Here's the part I found weird:

"I want to say thank you to member of the Recording Academy for voting this way, but I know that the way the Recording Academy voted is a direct reflection of the passion of the fans, so I want to say thank you to the fans for telling you a secret [new album announcement]."

I am aware that the weird wording is likely just because she wanted to plug the album and needed a way to segue from "I want to thank the academy" to the announcement. But when you actually listen to what she says in order to do that, it's rude!

She's saying that the academy is just voting for the album that is most popular with the public. The academy is made up of artists, producers, and technicians who work in the industry. This is not the People's Choice awards. Most academy members do NOT view themselves as just voting based on record sales or fanbase. These are people in the industry and while I'm sure they are subconsciously swayed by what is popular, they are voting based on who they really think deserves to be awarded. I bet if you asked most of the people who voted for Taylor why they did it, it's not because her fans are passionate. They would say it's based on their own professional assessment of which album in the category was most deserving.

Taylor's comment was kind of a slight against both the academy (whatever, you guys don't matter, you're just doing what the fans tell you they like best) as well as kind of a neg of everyone else in the category (you lost because you have fewer fans or your fans are less passionate, basically people like me more).

I don't think she meant it to come out that way, but it did, and is why maybe using that moment to promo her album was a mistake. It seems like a very weird misread of the situation from someone who has, uh, been to the Grammys a few times.

Where's your diatribe on Jay Z insulting the entire Grammy institution while also accepting an award, and going on a tirade about his 30-Grammy-award-winning wife not getting enough recognition?

I think he had a point. There has been overt and most likely still is unconscious racism as a component of these shows. It may have been a diatribe, but because of the history of the awards, I give him a pass. Celine Dion (a white woman) won the award 27 years ago, so systemic racism wasn’t a component Taylor had to deal with. She doesn’t get a pass for promoting her next album during an acceptance speech.

Did no one else know that the Grammys were hyping Taylor making a big announcement at the award show? Because their social media was all over it - and all the old fuddy duddies on here apparently didn't realize that. Taylor wasn't dissing the Academy or upsetting them - she was bringing them eyeballs. They knew it and were promoting it beforehand! Y'all are just insane with this "how dare she" stuff. She doesn't do anything off the cuff.

And the Grammy voters are hopelessly out of touch - have been for years. So yeah, they didn't vote for the best album of the year because of artistic quality. They wouldn't know that if it bit them in the rear. (It's why SZA should have won this year, imho.) They vote for the album that is safest. It did not at all come across as "my fans like me more." That's just a bizarre take.

Agree. The announcement though to me was the rudest. The Celine thing and even pulling up the poor other woman who was shell shocked wasn’t as bad as the first speech. She managed to slight the board/people who vote and turn the Grammys into (the Grammys: Taylor’s version) with that speech.

To me she appears as someone who is living in the moment, taking it all in, and enjoying it all. Living in the moment is something that takes most decades and age to figure out. That was Oprah’s send off when she ended her talk show “live in the moment”.

And I’m not a Swiftie.

There is living in the moment and then there is immersing yourself in the main character role. Those are two different things. Just because you are in the moment, doesn’t mean you are so into yourself you don’t take anyone else’s feelings or reactions into account with your behavior.

Nicely put. At her core Taylor is childish and just something she will need to work on. It's hard to imagine she's only one year younger then Adele

Wow TIL I learned that Taylor is only a year younger than Adele and 3 years older than Miley Cyrus and yet both of those people seem like adults and Taylor... does not.

Stunted.

Miley seems like an adult to you? Interesting. I'm not dissing her, but I guess I see her as more ego-maniacal, self-absorbed, etc. but OK. ("I'm doing this so I can watch myself tomorrow and say I look good." And we're dissing Taylor Swift for being her own main character?) I'm a fan of her music though.

Miley literally made a joke, on stage at the Grammys, about not wearing underwear. Something a 15 year old might find funny.

Miley has a childish humor but learned there's a place and a time. She obviously wasn't always lied that but yeah she still better composure then Taylor.

I was shocked when I found out too! It's like she's perpetually stuck in a middle aged mindset. A great entertainer but sticks out like a sore thumb compared to her peers

If she can't be the main character in winning an award, and then breaking a Grammy record for that award, when can she? I didn't think she was rude at all. Celine Dion was there to give out an award, not steal the award winner's thunder. That was the Grammy award winner's moment, not someone who's out of the public eye most of the time. I don't think Miley had to suck up to Mariah Carey either. They're presenters. If they want to be fawned over, put out new material and get nominated and be your own main character. Don't try to steal from others.
P.S. I don't actually think Mariah Carey or Celine Dion gives two craps about whether they were fawned over. They had their many, many moments in the sun. They were likely just happy to be there.

This is a misunderstanding of what awards shows are for. They are only partially about recognizing the "best" work of the year (where best is highly subjective and often very political). They are industry gatherings and they serve a lot of purposes. For the recording academy and the industry as a whole, the event is absolutely as much about bringing out people like Mariah and Celine and giving them moments of recognition and honor, as it is about recognizing Miley and Taylor for their recent work.

I don't think Mariah and Celine expect to be "fawned over" exactly, but why would they show up at all if they didn't expect some love and respect there? Celine has a debilitating illness that likely made getting ready for and showing up to that show pretty challenging for her. It's not like she's doing it for money or to get her name out there. She definitely didn't make the effort so Taylor Swift could snatch a Grammy out of her hands and then turn her back on her.

It was rude.

They show up to stay relevant. It's not the award recipients job to keep them relevant.
I just disagree that it was rude.

Everyone is focusing on the Celine snub, but I actually think Taylor's first acceptance of the night was just as rude, and not just because she plugged her album (that was a little tacky but it's not unheard of for an artist to mention current/upcoming work in an acceptance). Here's the part I found weird:
