I know most of them. Normal kids! One athlete, several legacies. More than one from highly intellectual families

The ones I know on list are not donor/insanely connected. There are some legacy, though not all.

If you want your kid to get into an Ivy, GDS is the way to go. The kids seem to get in without crazy ECs

Legacy or whatever - if that's right that's 7 (including 3 EA) this year which is bananas.

MCPS is not that high pressure and FREE. Why does anyone pay for these schools?

You must not live in Bethesda. The pressure to succeed at the W schools is intense because everyone's parents have at least one if not two degrees from selective schools. Frankly, it would be much healthier to attend a high school where the goal is to attend Montgomery College and then transfer to UMD CP which has become such a competitive school as well.

Whitman is a very large school. Teachers are great, kids are bright but it's too big for individualized attention. A kid can easily fall through the crack and it's hard for parents to naviaged the system. The senior class did well this year because they are exceptionally smart AND they come from families that attended those schools so they are not blind when applying to these programs. The school has also developed a reputation for the past half century which puts it in the same league as the top privates. The rigor of the classes is unmatched. It does not make sense to send your kid to Landon or Holton if you live in the surrounding neighborhood.

Whitman and BCC kids are under the exact same pressure if they are good students and aiming for top schools. One major difference is that they can apply to as many schools as they want. The GDS kids are uniquely screwed. It was increased to 12 schools this year (up from 10) but I think the number of teaches permitted remained at 3. The add ons had to fee safeties. And our kid got the most ridiculous schools suggested as their extra safeties. This is even though there was a safety that they were very happy with already.

+1000 So glad my kids don't go to GDS. What awful pressure.

Isn't the pressure the same for a Whitman kid with ambitious parents?

Unfortunately, this is in no way specific to GDS.

Yep. It’s universal.
