I'm in Maine and the FL plates are everywhere here for one day under 6mos per year. It's likely some of them are fine with FL politics, but I know for certain that many are horrified by what's happening in their domicile.

Interesting theory.

As one of those professors who went into another non academic field, there is no way I would go back. Once you start making more money, it's hard to take a pay cut to move to Florida.

If the GOP continues to dominated in red states I think the quality of life (and cost of living) will improve in blue states and decline in red states but you won't see any real effects for 15-20 years. I think one more electrical grid failure may start to turn the tide in Texas, but I'm not exactly holding my breath. There seems to be a massive amount of ignorance and apathy among the citizenry that governmental actions are carried out through the officials they elect.

I agree- in the short term, I think a lot of the positions get backfilled. I’m in a biology field and I can’t tell you how many of my grad school colleagues jumped from post-doc to post-doc after finishing their phd. Some did ultimately become professors but others left academia for govt, etc. More aspiring professors than spots available, and a few years at a FL university is not a bad gamble if it’s a stepping stone to somewhere better. And some would hedge their bets that FL will turn back towards the middle eventually. But if FL does not self-correct, and it becomes increasingly expensive to own and insure a house, the brain drain will be very real.
