What I learned:

1) If my child seems off, I am calling the authorities right away and any use of STAN, I'm calling authorities. I'm not waiting 2 weeks for report missing.

2) I am not going to allow anger to fill my life if my child is murdered. I'm going to try to allow forgiveness and empathy to fill my life instead. I'm definitely not going to blame the parents of the murderer for their child's sins.

3) if my child commits a crime or I'm suspicious of them committing murder, etc, I am not going to allow them back to my home. They can go to the police and surrender or run away but do not get me involved. I will not be a part of it and allow it to ruin my life.

4) the justice system sucks -- silence should not be a right but instead anything you say should not be used against you so you don't need to be silent. That way, honest people who make mistakes are rewarded. Like if Brian knew that he'd get 5 years for accidental murder if he went to the police on August 27 but life if he stayed silent, this wouldn't have happened.

5) we need to teach DV in public schools like we teach sex ed, drug use, etc -- children should recognize it and stay away from it, and perpetrators should get help asap to stop the cycle.

It's been a traumatic two months for many of us as we've relived our own abuses so I'm glad it has come to an end and I hope something good will come out of it.

Or let’s take a different cut and assume Gabby was the abused victim and Brian was the awful abusive monster depicted in the media. Guess what? Any person who readily stays with an abuser as Brian has been described by mass media to be had an EXTREMELY effed up childhood. They don’t understand love, they have no self-worth most likely because it was destroyed by parents, and they have no safety. They are never just a victim of their romantic abuser, they are first and foremost a victim of their upbringing. So, based on this perspective, the petito parents are almost surely abusive and/or completely neglectful people who did t properly raise their daughter.

NP but ignoring your descriptions, I 100% agree that there is something off about Gabby's parents. Her dad moving to Florida to be near her is such a huge red flag in my mind. He abused her - whether it's emotionally or physically, he is not a good man. Her mom may have gotten away from him, but she is still clearly a huge pushover. Any child raised by people like that is going to have problems. Very sad for her.

I hate to re-hash this police encounter, but I still believe the fact that Gabby was labeled as the primary aggressor on the 12th was a huge mistake on the cops part.

So in your extensive experience, you think it's usually the abuser woman who winds up brutally murdered by strangulation? Because the poor guy just snapped? You also have to note that there were conflicting reports and that all mutual acquaintances painted Brian as possessive, and her Florida best friend described him as financially abusive (interfering constantly with Gabby's employment) and isolating.

While I agree that you have included many valid points, I still think that the parents should have spoken up in the beginning.

When Gabby’s family was calling the Laundries, inquiring where she was or what they actually knew, etc., I just find it cruel that they never responded back.
While hiring a lawyer + deciding against speaking publicly is their fundamental right - morally they should have responded to Gabby’s parents and let them know what they knew.

By doing this, they only made themselves look bad.

Of course it made them look bad, but it was the smart thing to do. It’s 100% what I would have advised my clients to do as well. we don’t know what Brian told them. He may have told them absolutely nothing. Remember, her body wasn’t even found until after Brian left. They may have had zero clue that was something wrong. Brian left only two days after she was announced missing- that could have been a complete shock to the parents who could have led to him feeing a need to flee. He could have played her disappearance off as something he has no idea about. We simply don’t know what they knew or thought.

They absolutely knew something was wrong. Their son drive out west with his live-in fiancé and drove home without her. Something was definitely wrong. Even if he said they broke up, they didn’t want to know where she was? They didn’t think anything of all the calls and texts from her parents asking if they had heard anything? They didn’t think to respond “well our kid is here, no clue where your kid is”??

Exactly. That’s what is so off about their behavior. Then the seemingly indifference about their missing son for weeks.

How would we know whether or not they are indifferent, or that they didn’t want to know where she was, or that he didn’t make up a story explaining everything away?

They didn't do a single press conference.

They didn't answer a single phone call from Gabby Petito's family.

They didn't post any messages anywhere on social media.

They didn't release a letter to a local or national news source.

Hell, they could have printed out a memo and tacked it to their garage door.

Instead they were silent. That's indifference.

Well, they DID raise a monster. Whether it’s their fault or not who knows. But if they had been less shady and obstructive from the beginning, people would be more inclined to give them the benefit of the doubt now. They went on a freaking camping vacation while their beloved DIL was missing. They refused to answer calls or texts from her frantic parents, who for a time thought Brian was missing too. These facts are not in dispute.

These parents just lost a child; their lives destroyed by protests and a sick media circus, caused largely by how pretty, blond, and seemingly innocent Gabby was.

Shouldn’t they be punished even more now? (that will surely bring Gabby back from the dead, or deter others from , . . . ??? ).

Stop victim blaming. The media circus was caused by their son murdering a woman, lying about it, and them helping him get away with it.
