Glad you mentioned this...my notice went to my spam folder. We are Floris-Westfield and our commutes take us in the opposite direction. This will make pickups from afternoon activities so much easier.

I wish they would be transparent on enrollment - they want it to be a magnet school - that is clear - but the hocus pocus on transportation I think kept people away. Even TJ busses from out here. We opted in and I’m excited for my kid- I think it will be great but li do regret the chaos led some of his friends to stay at base schools (or sports). What will be weird is if this becomes an Oak Hill ES plus opt in situation which feels possible at this point. They will have a few OH kids who had no intention of being at a stem magnet - could get weird. Many kids at OH are into this sort of magnet program anyway so 80 percent will be ok with it. I actually think our home values will go up if we are zoned as in boundary for an AI/Robotics/Engineering school. Way up actually. Do not waste your time typing that this is not a magnet school, I understand your view, I have another.

They were trying to. make it an opt in school but if they didn't;t make their target, they can't do that.

This is the only year it will be opt in. They will set the boundaries and that is going to be who attends the school. They start that process this month. No one has been able to explain why it wasn’t wrapped into the boundary review but it wasn’t.

I know anyone’s insight on this will be pure speculation but the FCPS website for Western states “The four draft boundary options for western high school that were presented at the first open house and posted online were preliminary concepts intended to explore a geographically based boundary.” How can a traditional hs have non geographically based boundaries?!

I think the way she included Western is misleading, it makes it sound like the Western boards have been sent when they have not. I think she wants to have a place to discuss boundaries, including the recent process AND Western but the way she worded it it sounds like Western boundaries were wrapped up.

That’s a really good point. Lots of topics being discussed so Western may not even be front and center.

We love Chantilly. Would be happy staying there, but one proposal split neighborhood to go to Oakton. Drive to Oakton is way too far and would split our neighborhood. Can you imagine driving back roads in this weather? Chantilly is overcrowded. Westfield is overcrowded and so is Oakton now.

None of this would matter if the School Board members and Reid had brains and a spine.

Yes, the school board and superintendent should only listen to Crossfield parents who want their kids to attend Western not Fox Mill families or anyone else.

Fox mill ain't crossfield. One isnt dependent on the other.

But only one is likely to be included in the boundary.

It's super low effort to do a change.org petition, but if you can't even do that. There's no way you're going to get the outcome you want.

If the new school is as popular as you say hundreds will sign it. Put your money where your mouth is bro.

I don't understand people who sign a change.org petition. Those don't do anything, nobody looks at them, the names could be fake for all I know.

School board members repeatedly brought up Change.org petitions during the boundary review particularly in regards to Flint ES. Creating a petition would absolutely help Crossfield families looking to rezone to Western.

Sadly, kids elsewhere in the county are being involuntarily redistricted, with families told there's "no money" for their schools and boundary changes are the only option, even though the School Board was able to find $200 million it hadn't expected to spend for years to pay for the new western HS.

Maybe at some point they'll take their commitment to equity seriously.

Please. The five HS who had kids who had the choice were all over crowded or they are close to being over crowded. The HS was needed and everyone knows that. The School Board choose the opt in option because they were too cowardly to set the boundaries for the new school and move kids there next year. This process has been an example of how poorly FCPS handles boundary changes. If the school boar had set boundaries and told families they had to send kids there you would be complaining about the mental health damage done to the kids.
