He has heard there is not much school spirit and that campus life is boring compared to other colleges. Would love to get some input.
My DS is a sophomore at W&M. My DS wanted a smaller school and didn't want a frat/party culture. Ironically, he joined a fraternity and was living in the fraternity house this year and is planning on living there next year. He spent a weekend at UVA last semester visiting some of his friends from high school and he said the party atmosphere there made him uncomfortable.
The way he describes his social life is he does something social almost every Friday and Saturday night. He goes to some "dry" social events on the weekends and some where alcohol is served. He does have friends that drink to excess, but he said there is no pressure and the drinking just happens on the weekend. During the week, the students are serious about studying. He is very involved with a club sport and attends their practices weekly. They have social and service events that he also participates in. His fraternity plays alot of intramural sports - both coed and just males.
My DS loves watching sports and he and his friends go to every home football and basketball game. He wishes the teams were better and more students attended the games.
W&M has several all campus traditions - the convocation at the beginning of school year. Homecoming is a big deal. The Yule Log ceremony right before the winter break. Charter Day. These events all attract a large number of students so there is school spirit.
I think the key is to get involved and find your Tribe.
