We had staycations mostly. Once, I did win an educational summer 1 month trip to a European country as an HS exchange student. My HS foreign language skills got me one of two slots allocated to my state.

I’m a teacher so no vacations for us! People are so jealous that I have summers off but I don’t make enough to go anywhere. I do use my tax refund to get a pool membership for a few hundred dollars. Reading books at the pool is priceless to me.

We are going to Deep Creek Lake for a week at an AirBnB.
My friend was interested in doing the same trip, but when she inquired about the price of the AirBnB, she was horrified and is doing a week of car camping instead (the kind where you show up and pitch a tent).
My other friend prefers staycations when her husband and kids go to see the grandparents in Florida, and sometimes do RV trips.
Another friend usually travels to the midwest to visit family, but this year is staying home due to being laid off from her federal government job.

Lake and river trips with camping. Rent or share one person's boat.
Fishing trips, similar.
Day trips to places: beach, amusement parks, museums, holidays in parks/firework shows/parades. Grill/picnic in parks/stop for ice cream.
Visiting relatives and staying with them.

Well, we're living on an LMC budget right now and we'll be doing a camping road trip. At least it's cheap as hell - I booked 6 nights for $200. Just hope it doesn't rain a lot.

This was my experience growing up. Looking back we did a lot of fun things, but all 2 hours away and we came back home or only stayed one night or with friends if an overnight. It was still always fun.

We do 1 really big adventure in summer and usually a nice $5-8k break in spring and that's the extent. We have long weekends but spending like $20k annually for a family of 4 is really it. I can't imagine doing more on that budget.
Are you kidding? We make half that and can, but don't go on vacations often. Beach holidays are pricy. I'd rather save for college.

We lived by the beach in my MC childhood. We went weekend camping with my Girl Scout Troop, I went to sleepaway Girl Scout and 4H camps two summers.
My mother and I took a bus to New Orleans and we stayed at a modest hotel it was a splurge the summer I was 9. Once we drove to Illinois to visit family. The best ever was 10 days driving to the Smokies in October and staying in a modest lodge. I had never seen fall foliage or mountains.
