Are you kidding me? It was ILLEGAL for that SUV to pass the car stopped at the crosswalk. In Maryland, that is a driving offense. It's also Illegal for them to go into the crosswalk while it's occupied. There's probably enough violations in that video alone for the drive of the SUV to lose their license.

Not the PP you are responding to, but I agree and am quite sane. Maybe you need to wrap your kids in armor and transport them in SUVs to keep them safe, but if safety requires this kind of thing, we should spend more time making streets safe than shaming parents. Just as we should spend time fighting rape culture, not blame women for going to parties, etc.

But this being DCUM, parenting shaming is going to appeal to many people rather than advocating social change

DP. We are asking Maryland to enforce traffic laws for the purpose of keeping children (and non-children) safe. That's what the traffic laws are there for - to keep people safe. Drivers stopping at crosswalks keeps people safe. Drivers stopping when there is a car stopped at a crosswalk keeps people safe.

There is a yellow sign a few feet back indicating the presence of pedestrians. This is a 30MPH road. A vigilant driver, going 30MPH, should have been able to see the family and stop - and the stopped car in the left lane should have added to their caution, even if there was a chance it was waiting to turn.

Everybody was wrong but the driver was wronger. Heck, the dad that crossed first didn't do so correctly in the first place where he should have slowed down , lean in and peek to see if there's an oncoming car. Child then copied what dad did, but the child should have been accompanied regardless.

This is where the Sligo Creek Trail crosses Piney Branch Road. There isn't a different crosswalk. This is this one. If you are on the Sligo Creek Trail, and you want to cross Piney Branch Road, this is where you cross.

Are you f'ing insane? The law requires you to not pass another car stopped in front of a crosswalk. There's a reason for that - situations exactly like this. Of course it's the SUV's responsibility to slow down and stop when the car in the left lane is stopped. How are you so ignorant of the law? Are you another MD driver? It is absolutely prudent for a car to slow down when there is a CROSSWALK before you and the car next to you has come to a standstill. Come on. Where is your common sense?
