I believe immigrants to this country should enter legally, and as part of that process, prove that their entering the country will be beneficial to the United States. You're right. This is a wealthy state and Montgomery County is significantly wealthier than the rest of the state. I think you are correct that we need to distribute the wealth more evenly. So maybe there should be an extra Montgomery County tax to support the dreamer's college fund. After all, that's the most fair wait to redistribute the wealth, right? They have the most, so should miss the extra money the least.

Then why won't those wealthy MoCo residents move to DC or VA, which for many of them is only minutes away.

Saying the wealthy should be taxed at a higher level on a national scale can work because, bloviating aside, next to no one is going to flee the country over this. But people will, and to a degree already have, move over the boarder if the relative tax burden here becomes much greater than neighboring areas.

Because there are very few parts of the state other than MoCo, where the average HHI is significantly higher than the rest of the state, where you can find a lot of support for this policy of free education for dreamers. While it may be a Democratic state, the rest of the state has less disposable income, is against higher taxes and is already suffering from a lack of state funds to handle issues that are of local importance. They don't see where the money will come from, they don't want existing budget line items cut further and don't want higher taxes. Montgomery County is one of the few places in the state where the majority of households can handle increases in taxes to support their pet projects and causes and hence think that tax and spend more is a valid way to run a government.

Hogan has wider approval in the rest of the state due to his policies of making things better for the middle class and poorer residents. He made sure taxes did NOT go up this year, he cut the tolls on the various toll roads which puts actual cash back into the pockets of many middle class residents who have to commute via toll roads to work. And outside of MoCo, most of the state approved of the change to the school year which increased the state's income from taxes due to the extra week of summer. That extra revenue was used to help forestall any increases in taxes for the year and helped pay for a larger budget than last year.

There are people all over the world and US who need things more than I do. I expect my government in my area though to look out first for me and the people in our community and if they help other people it is with the goal to help our community in turn. People naturally expect their tax dollars to help their community. Helping people outside of the citizens in that government area is called charity and is not something people expect to be part of a government budget.
